I used to make my own ginger ale a few years ago, using fresh ginger and those wonderful glass bottles with the built-in stoppers.

My version was very strong yet strangely addictive. Then one evening I heard a series of loud bangs downstairs.

Turned out that my ginger ale was still fermenting in the fridge and the bottles detonated like glass-and-sugar laden grenades.

Gosh, what a mess!

In the link oldvirginian posted (#108), it says:

”Store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks, opening the bottle at least once a day to let out excess carbonation. Otherwise pressure will build up and you risk it exploding. “

soooo, thanks for the warning that it does actually happen.

One thing I learned is never to forget removing soda bottles from the trunk of the car when the temps are below freezing. Bottles do freeze (duh) and explode. I thought I blew a tire!
