“It’s not a full SHTF yet, not by a long shot.”

Nope. How many know anyone dead from this virus?

Imagine a real SHTF scenario — Stores emptied and NO restock coming, hospitals overflowing, nowhere to put dead grandparents, medicines running out, utilities unstable, income losses, tempers flaring...

Buy gift cards at your local restaurant, gives them money now and you get food later

Yep, that’s the scenario. Stock market down 75%, all retirements wiped out, housing prices collapse 50%. THEN the “yutes” in the city head to the ‘burbs to find food.

On Long Island -

Store I went to was just restocking all of its bread, so no problem there. As far as milk they had skim and a little overpriced organic only. No fresh chicken, only ground beef they had was organic also. They had fancier brands of pasta, but no store brand or Barilla. And no paper goods at all.

Still all in all, nothing too bad as long as you didn’t need paper goods.

“I wonder if cutting up ginger root and adding it to club soda would be the same as ginger ale?”

Better in most cases.
Most ginger ales now use artificial flavoring so none of the benefits of ginger is in the ale.
Canada Dry still has the ginger extract.

"Canada Dry still has the ginger extract."

It's the only brand which tastes correctly.

Thank you for the recipes!

It appears there is no need to purchase club soda (saves $$ and space) with the first two recipes. Joy!

I remember when I was a kid a lightning strike set off a fire at a stockyard. When we got close I saw a bunch of them humping each other. One of the firemen told us that this is what they do when they panicking. I guess we are not like cattle afterall.

My cousin lives in Siloam Springs AR. He sent me pics of empty Walmart shelves in Springdale, Fayetteville, and Siloam apparently he, his wife, and daughter all split up to try various stores. They all came back with nothing. He’ll survive though. He has a freezer full of beef from the steer he had butchered and they buy stuff in bulk when it’s on sale.

I used to make my own ginger ale a few years ago, using fresh ginger and those wonderful glass bottles with the built-in stoppers.

My version was very strong yet strangely addictive. Then one evening I heard a series of loud bangs downstairs.

Turned out that my ginger ale was still fermenting in the fridge and the bottles detonated like glass-and-sugar laden grenades.

Gosh, what a mess!

We live in WV, but only 5 miles from Maryland, 17 from Pennsylvania, and 23 from Virginia. So it doesn’t make a lot of difference to us about cases. We did stop by the casino in Charles Town last weekend and the place was full. :)

What a mess indeed!

In the link oldvirginian posted (#108), it says:

”Store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks, opening the bottle at least once a day to let out excess carbonation. Otherwise pressure will build up and you risk it exploding. “

soooo, thanks for the warning that it does actually happen.

One thing I learned is never to forget removing soda bottles from the trunk of the car when the temps are below freezing. Bottles do freeze (duh) and explode. I thought I blew a tire!

None of the MD cases are near you. However, that will likely change over the next two weeks, and VA sooner than that.
