For many reasons, mainly so they could take care of themselves, I taught our kids life skills from when they were still in diapers. When daughter was about a year and a half, I made her first chocolate chip cookies while she sat on the counter (yeah, bad mom). Six months later, I sat her on the counter to make her a second batch and she told me everything that went into them.
They’d sit in the grocery cart and pick out which veggies were ripe and not bruised.
I was sick in bed with pneumonia when daughter was in 4th grade. She made the entire Thanksgiving dinner by memory from scratch including the pies with homemade crust. Years later, she admitted she doesn’t roll out pie dough but mushes it into the pie plate, lol. She only asked me how much sage to put into the dressing (from homemade cornbread not that nasty stove top stuff) and all I could manage to say was, “twice as much as you think.” She got the 23 lb turkey into the oven but had to ask hubby to pull it out of the oven. No one’s grandmother could have done better.
Cooking isn’t rocket science. Those kids could teach themselves even if they have lazy parents.
My kids have umpteen youtube cooking channel subscriptions.
They Love it.
