Maryland Governor Closes Public Schools, Restricts Access to State Building Among other Changes in Response to Coronavirus

Maryland Governor Larry Hogan announced that all public schools in Maryland will close for two weeks to prevent the spread of Coronavirus. The school closures will begin Monday.

State officials say public schools will be closed from Mon. March 16 to Fri. March 27.

Hogan said in a press conference Thursday afternoon the number of cases are expected to dramatically rise.

Hogan laid out the following other steps being taken.

- The Maryland Emergency Management Agency has been moved to it's highest activation level.

- Executive Order signed activating the National Guard.

- All state government is raised to elevated level 2: all non-essential state employees approved for telework will be required to telework.

- Public access to state buildings including the state house will be restricted until further notice.

- Executive Order signed prohibiting any type of gathering/events with 250 people or more at all locations throughout the state.

- All senior activity centers will be closed until Maryland is not operating under a state of emergency.

- Aall state and local buildings with 250 or more people must communicate the recommendations of the Maryland Department of Health in regards to "social distancing".

- Executive Order signed closing the cruise ship terminal at the port of Baltimore until further notice.

- Extension of all expiration dates for all licenses and permits issued by the state of Maryland.

- Gov. Hogan calling for hospitals to change visitor policies.

- No prison visits allowed until further notice.

So far, there are 12 confirmed cases of Coronavirus in the state, including one through community transmission. Hogan said three people have recovered from the virus.

This is going to affect me this weekend. I had planned to attend a cat show at the Maryland State fairgrounds. With this executive order, the cat show is now closed on 2 counts: no public assemblies of more than 250 people and restriction of public access to state buildings.

Washington Times is reporting people in Wuhan itself are socializing again and going back to work. I wonder how long those who are benefitting from this crisis over here can keep it going.

Can he please void the stupid gun control laws enacted in 2013 ‘for the children?’

And while he’s at it, turn the state from a ‘may issue’ one to a ‘shall issue’ one?
