....................... Now, of course, an authoritarian country has tools at its disposal democracies do not. In any case, China has a total caseload of 80,000 that has been quite steady for a few weeks. China has a population of 1.4 billion. In other words, 1 in every 17,000 Chinese have come down with the disease. Obviously, the incidence rate in the Wuhan area is higher than the national incidence rate in China -- maybe more than 25 times higher. This is also the area where the disease spread rapidly since almost nobody early on knew what they were dealing with.
Yesterday, Germanys Angela Merkel predicted that 60-70% of that country's population of roughly 85 million would come down with the virus. Really? Based on what? 1 in 17,000 in China but 7 in 10 in Germany? .......................... Why would Russia have only 15 cases? The worlds highest incidence rate could be in Iran, if the official numbers represent just a small fraction of the actual caseload as some non-government sources in the country suggest. Iranian leadership has been decimated by the virus, which has not occurred anywhere else.

Hannity is losing it.
He’s been whistling past the graveyard for weeks now.
I don’t know about Italy. But it sounds like they are a basket case and should not be part of any mean (average). There is a rumor that they are not treating people over 65, but I have no idea if true. The link below seems to confirm the rumor.
I know that whatever they are doing, they are doing wrong. their death rate is insane.

So why is Merkel screaming about up to 60 million Germans getting infected? When South Korea has managed to halt it at approx 8,000 9,000?
Don’t confront the panic mob with logic good sir.
8,000 to 9,000
Hindsight is 20/20. Of course knowing what we know now some things should have been done differently.
But even saying that, I question if even had those things been done, if we wouldn’t be in precisely the same situation that we are in now.
A cold setting? Seriously? LOL!
Because she’s a crazy old socialist bat.
That Merkel statement is just weird.
So if the infection rate in China is 1 in 17,000 and its already stabilized, how on earth can the infection rate in Germany, one of the most advanced countries on the planet, end up at 7 in 10 of the population then?
Nothing puzzling about Italy at all:
“Prato, Tuscany has the largest concentration of Chinese people in Italy and all of Europe. It has the second largest population of Chinese people overall in Italy after Milan.”

Yes. Just found out about that.
Read post # 19.
You may have addressed this one already, but am posting it here for reference.
Also encouraging to see Japan get a handle on things, as well as Singapore
Japan has tested 1/10 the people South Korea has
the others took aggressive action early
Did a search on Italian healthcare and:
The healthcare system in Italy is a regionally based national health service known as Servizio Sanitario Nazionale (SSN). It provides universal coverage to citizens and residents, with public healthcare largely free of charge.
I don't know the answer, but like Canada and others that provide "free" healthcare, it is not always the "best" healthcare. It appears they have a shortage of doctors and medical equipment. May be a simple as that.
You’re right, we might be. Maybe we would be a few days behind where we are now.
It’s a balancing act and a judgement call. There are no clear right answers or timing.
Something like the CDC failure is hard to anticipate, until there is a failure.
Cause they have an even lower death rate than China
reports of people dying tagged “pneumonia” and not counted in the deaths
also many more cases they all agree
Looking at numbers from 2009 with the swine flu/h1n1
Our media is a shameful disgrace
Go look up those stats and see how overblown this is
Be safe but for heaven sake, use common sense
I will say this.
We’d better start planning for something like this to happen every ten years. Like planning for Hurricane Season. People are just too mobile for these things not to happen every once in awhile.
Not quite. Read this from the New York Times:
Inside Chinas All-Out War on the Coronavirus
Dr. Bruce Aylward, of the W.H.O., got a rare glimpse into Beijings campaign to stop the epidemic. Heres what he saw.

“Bottom line is we dont know. The author says he does not know why the situation in northern Italy is so bad relative to other places. He also writes that he does not know the basis for Merkel saying that 70% of Germans will become infected. There is so much uncertainty that dismissing this as no worse than the flu is not how I am looking at it. BTW I thought Hannity was awful last night - the show was literally 100% about politics and unrelentingly dismissive of the virus. Just my opinion FWIW.”
I can think of several reasons why this has hit Italy particularity hard. First, they were hit with a large number of cases at once. It can be assumed that many Chinese traveled home for the lunar new year and brought the virus back with them to Italy. So instead of starting of with a few dozen cases Italy started off with hundreds, maybe thousands of imported cases from China. This cause the virus to get a strong foothold in the country before the authorities had a chance to ramp up their response. News reports indicate that many hospitals are overwhelmed with the staff getting sick as well. A high initial infection count would cause that.
Next the average age in Italy is older than many countries, the disease affects the elderly more than others further straining the medical system.
Finally, the nature of the fashion industry itself may be to blame. Producing, textiles and turning them into clothes involves creating a lot of airborne fibers. Sufficient fibers can cause respiratory problems. Growing up I had a very good friend who’s dad owned a furniture repair shop. He really specialized in recovering furniture. He had to give it up in his late fifties because the fibers had compromised his lungs. I wonder if this could have an effect as well.
