Coronavirus is 10 times more lethal than the seasonal flu, Trump's task force immunologist says

Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told lawmakers during a House Oversight Committee hearing Wednesday that COVID-19 — the disease caused by the novel coronavirus — is probably about 10 times more lethal than the seasonal flu.

President Trump has often compared COVID-19 to the flu, which affects tens of thousands of Americans each year, in an effort to calm people down, but Fauci clearly wasn't trying to downplay the seriousness of the virus' spread. Fauci is a member of the White House's coronavirus task force.

At the same time, he did clarify that 10 times figure actually brings the new coronavirus' fatality rate lower than official estimates, which hover around 3 percent. The flu has a mortality rate of about 0.1 percent, so, when considering the likelihood that there are many asymptomatic or very mild cases that have gone undiagnosed, Fauci places the new coronavirus' lethality rate at somewhere around 1 percent. While that's a good deal lower than the current data suggests, it still would lead to significant numbers of fatalities, and makes the flu comparisons seem pretty questionable.

“....is probably about 10 times more lethal..”

He should not talk unless it is more than probably. This Dr. looks like a never trumper.

Rush is talking about this right now. He says it is being reported as bad, but actually what Fauci is saying is good.

I have yet to talk to anyone, customers, family member, friend, acquaintance, etc...

...who isn’t rolling their eyes over this.

I’m beginning to wonder if there will actually be a backlash effect as the masses begin to realize either they don’t know anyone who has this or if they do Know someone who has it, it was minor and they simply got over it.

The lies and hype can only carry so long.

They have a pretty brutal system as it relates to calling off sick..even with a Drs excuse.

This gives rise to someone with a fever spreading whatever he had because he didnt have” XYZ’ built up to take days off.

The Supervisor said that the new rule (after my friend complained about the situation) was going to be that the person not work with a fever and would not be penalized. My guess is only because they were worried about being sued.

Because Employees are, indeed, disposable to them. A lot of employees complain about the whole system

Remember the swine flu? I was in the Navy and they were requiring the vaccine before we got paid. I refused because my dad who worked for a medical equipment company had conversed with company doctors and they were concerned about the process. I was prepared for a courts martial but not getting the vaccine. A couple weeks later people starting getting some syndrome that paralyzed their legs from the vaccine. The program was stopped and I never did get the vaccine. The swine flu pandemic never happened. Similarly I am in very good health, take care of myself and practice good hygiene so I will continue my normal daily activities. Now all I need is to find a store with toilet paper left on the shelves...

You have it backwards. If you read my posts I have been saying all along the panic is counterproductive and needless. So far this is not as bad as swine flu was. It may get worse but panic and breathlessly reported false information will not help the situation.

Unfortunately, the damage is already done. No doubt the low info voter types will think POTUS personally killed a million people.

the damage isn’t complete....yet....

On the bright side, if in 6 weeks this has subsided and we’re left with a stockmarket and jobmarket in shambles... and relatively few deaths, who is to blame?

The media, and hopefully it’s the nail in their damn coffin.

Interesting story.

I wont be getting any vaccine rushed through.

Only vaccine I will get is the shingles..and that is because I can’t stand pain and the stories of it are horrific to me.

To repeat!!!

Dr. Anthony Fauci was given the Presidential Medal of Freedom from Prezident 0bama.

That is reason for optimism of it NOT getting worse. Also, I hope PDJT is investigating with VIGOR the bad characters potentially behind this whole thing. Maybe there are a couple patriots in the CIA...maybe.

The 2003 SARS epidemic, which began in November 2002 and ran through July 2003, had a mortality rate of 9% to 10%, he said, meaning roughly 10% of the people who caught it eventually died.

Since COVID-19 emerged in China two and a half months ago, “it clearly is not as lethal ... but it certainly spreads better,” he said, adding seasonal flu has a mortality rate of 0.1%.
