Coronavirus in NY: Cuomo unveils state’s hand sanitizer made by prisoners

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Monday unveiled what he called the state’s weapon against despicable price-gougers taking advantage of coronavirus fears — a new hand sanitizer produced by New York prison inmates.

Cuomo said the “superior product” is not only cheaper than brands made by greedy commercial businesses but will be readily available to New York governments, the MTA, schools and even the prisons where it’s being made.

“It’s much cheaper for us to make it ourselves than to buy it on the open market,” said Cuomo, adding that a gallon jug of the state-produced product costs $6 to make. It has a “floral bouquet,” the governor added.

Also my “demand” for a license plate is zero. I am forced to purchase it by law. I am also curious as to how many prison farms sell their produce on the open market rather than using it to feed the prisoners? Could be I guess but once again the issue is not the prisoners but the government utilizing cheap labor that they price out of the private sector and benefiting off of it.

Don’t some prisons have prisoners doing telemarketing?

Yes but that should incur a death penalty in my mind. To the person that set them up to call my house not necessarily the prisoner.

Yes, I would do a sperm count on it before I used it ...

Not sure about NY but commercial companies took the license plate biz away from prisons in many states because they could do it cheaper with automation. Not sure why this would be much different.

“Williams ‘Lectric Shave filtered through white bread was a preferred apertif when I worked on the CD Unit at a State Hospital.”

This hand sanitizer is going to be the gourmet stuff.

Now they just have to convince management to make different “fragrances” with fruit flavorings - Margarita Lime, Pina Colada, etc.

(from the article): “It’s much cheaper for us to make it ourselves than to buy it on the open market,” said Cuomo,
adding that a gallon jug of the state-produced product costs $6 to make. It has a “floral bouquet,” the governor added."

Is this the same inmate labor used to paint the NY state license plates years ago ?
The inmate labor used to make license plates urinated into the paint years ago, resulting in burbling the plates surface, and they all needed to be replaced prematurely.
The paint bubbled off, making license numbers irregular and unreadable. Also, one of the key ingredients to making sanitizer is alcohol.
Are they going to allow inmates to make "homebrew" out of the alcohol ?
Inmates make 'jungle juice' out of fermented fruit, and then add sugar an let it 'work' for several weeks to make the "homebrew "
There will be a lot of partying going on during the holidays, when Corrections staff is minimal, endangering staff.

The Cons will drink most of it and claim evaporation. Or, black market it. Way to go Cuomo !

Here is the “unveiling” of NYS Clean, and the Press Conference. He talks about price gouging, and does NOT use the term “Greedy Commercial Businesses”.

Surprised the press tried to inflame the reader?

If there is alcohol content of any kind in that hand sanitizer, then New York is violating its own rules on alcohol products in their prisons. They stopped allowing mouthwash that contained alcohol from being allowed inside because inmates were drinking it.

And if it isn’t quite cost efficient, just use some taxpayer money to make up the difference. Better than those greedy corporations, who just don’t sell anything if it doesn’t make a profit./s

There is a link to Cuomo’s presser. He did not say greedy corporations. He did mention New Rochelle in need of hand sanitizer. Have you seen the Community in New Rochelle that was affected, and the vector?

In case you missed it-

Rabbi Reuven Fink of Young Israel of New Rochelle, the synagogue at the center of the coronavirus, had tested positive for COVID-19, the synagogue and Yeshiva University said.
