The Philadelphia metropolitan area has a rather large Italian population. Yet despite this, the majority appear unfamiliar with the history of their ancestors in the United States. Such is the case of the forgotten internment camps of Italians during World War II. Years ago, while working on a history project in middle school, my grandfather (long since deceased) told me a story about events that occurred during World War II that the majority are not familiar with. His father, who worked at a Stetson Hat factory that was once located in Kensington, had immigrated to the country from Sicily. After Pearl Harbor was bombed, his status in the United States changed; in the blink of an eye, he went from hard-working Italian immigrant to “enemy alien” to an internment camp.

Everyone in coastal California had to have blackout curtains. My Irish-American grandmother complained about them and the air raid wardens who enforced the rules for years after the war.

There was also an extensive history of German and Italian agitation, spying, sabotage, and subversion before US entry into WW II. Fortunately, the FBI and other federal agencies did a good job of shutting it down. Arguably, mass internments proved unnecessary, but there was justification for them.

The WWII casualty rate in our neighborhood was huge... Italian as well as Irish...
There was never any issue with the 1st and 2nd generation Italians living among us..

That’s Nazi revisionism, just as sure as the IHR site is. I knew many Italian nationals and their children in southeast Kansas, who were *not* in internment camps during World War II.
Since you lived during that time, you have a better idea of what was really happening. But, older family members told me that a few Italians they knew were arrested and sent to internment.
History textbooks say that the U.S. put Japanese Americans into internment camps. The textbooks usually don't mention that Italians and Germans also were sent to internment camps. A much smaller number of them were sent, but neither Germany nor Italy had attacked the U.S. directly.
No argument that many Americans of Italian and Irish descent served in WWII. Far, far more Americans of Italian background were drafted and fought in WWII than those who were sent to internment.

"In late 1940 members of the U.S. Army Signal Intelligence Service broke Japan's highest level diplomatic code and then constructed a machine that was an analog of the one used by the Japanese. This allowed the U.S. to read Japan's diplomatic traffic from then until after the end of the war. Intelligence thus gained was cover named MAGIC because it seemed that only magicians could have produced it. Among the decoded messages of 1941 were a number detailing espionage planning and operations involving Japanese-Americans along the West Coast. In February 1942 President Roosevelt authorized the evacuation of all persons of Japanese ancestry.
"In 1983 a congressional commission, ignoring available declassified intelligence and ignorant of MAGIC revelations, concluded the President's action was the result of racism, war hysteria and lack of political will.
