Update 03/06/2020: As a way to increase precautionary health measures, such as social distancing, and ensure the successful conclusion of the quarter for UW students on all of our campuses, as of March 9, 2020, classes and finals will not be held in person for the remainder of winter quarter, which ends March 20. Our campuses will remain open to serve all those who rely on our services, including hospitals and clinics, dining services, residence halls, and recreation and athletics facilities. Husky athletics events will proceed as scheduled. We plan to resume normal class operations when spring quarter begins March 30, pending public health guidance.

Dear Colleagues
Everyone is closely watching and monitoring the COVID-19 outbreak. This global emergency is presenting major challenges for our profession as we attempt to anticipate, tackle and eventually get ahead of it.
As there are many new experiences with this type of virus, we need to learn from those with more experience. Information is vital. As you will have seen, Northern Italy is in the middle of a crisis and Lombardy in particular has been severely affected. Our colleagues coordinating the emergency ICU response in Northern Italy have sent me the following message which they wish to convey to all our members.
I salute all the work our colleagues are doing, globally, faced with this situation. ESICM will endeavor to do its part to share accurate information and resources.
Wishing you all the strength needed in the coming months,
Yours respectfully
Prof. Jozef Kesecioglu

Dear friends,
At this moment in time, we believe it is important to share our first impressions and what we have learned in the first ten days of the COVID-19 outbreak.
We have seen a very high number of ICU admissions, almost entirely due to severe hypoxic respiratory failure requiring mechanical ventilation.
The surge can be important during an outbreak and cluster containment has to be in place to slow down virus transmission.
We are seeing a high percentage of positive cases being admitted to our Intensive Care Units, in the range of 10% of all positive patients.
We wish to convey a strong message: Get ready!
We also want to share with you some key points from our experience:
Get ready now - with your ICUs networks - to define your contingency plan in the event of an outbreak in your community
Dont work in silo. Coordinate with your hospital management and other healthcare professionals to prepare your response
Make sure your hospital management and procurement office have a protocol in place about which personal protection equipment (PPE) to stock and re-stock
Make sure your staff is trained in donning and doffing procedures
Use education, training and simulation as much as possible
Identify early hospitals that can manage the initial surge in a safe way
Increase your total ICU capacity
Get ready to prepare ICU areas where to cohort COVID-19 + patients - in every hospital if necessary
Put in place a triage protocol to identify suspected cases, test them and direct them to the right cohort
Make sure you set clear goals for care with the patients and their families early on
With our best regards

The man in his 40s was one of two recently confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus in Toronto.

NEW YORK
New York state coronavirus cases triple over 48 hours to 33, thousands under precautionary quarantine
The number of coronavirus cases in New York state has tripled over the last 48 hours to 33, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Friday.
The number will continue to go up because its mathematics, Cuomo said at a news briefing. The more you test, the more you will find.
The state reported 11 cases on Wednesday, 22 on Thursday and 33 by Friday morning. There are roughly 2,700 people in New York City under precautionary quarantine with more than 1,000 others also in voluntary isolation across the state, Cuomo said.
There are 44 people in the state under mandatory quarantine, nine of whom are in New York City, he said.
Half measures.
Never do half measures.

That campus needs to be closed and quarantined.
You know, I could write a lot of things that are secret here on FR; I could give you no proof they are true precisely because they are secret, but are no less true. I’m sure there are a large number of folks here who could reveal things which most would be terrified if they knew they existed or happened. But they will not because they are secret.
Because some bit of info challenges your credulity, does not create a disservice to anyone. Some of us know a lot about this stuff we cannot speak about. We may write in a vague style because we want you to know to understand something is or did happen, but we can provide no wider details.
There is no fear mongering unless the reader takes it that way - that’s the reader’s problem, not the messenger’s. This sort of info is taking responsibility for the dark things that happen, things which only a few know, but can harm all of us. Its a warning and a notice to look deeper beyond so-called ‘authorities’. You can chose to look deeper or you can chose to listen to your ‘betters’ your ‘authorities’. But do not shoot the messengers!
Gave him what for just now
Cuomo is the man—”The more you test, the more cases you get.”
I never would have predicted he would be the one guy to stand up and lead in this crisis.
You just never know....

He is doing the best job in the US..
really on top of it

I think Trump could do more business, even with the evil congresscritters, by (secure) Skype and phone, too.
Ok what about the UK’s Department of Disease Control DDC reference? Is there a department under that name in the UK?
Do you have a link to the Skin to Skin contact?
I look for it could not find it.
Just throwing this out there (down the rabbit hole):
This virus of reminds me of a choking agent where the victim lungs are attack. Also heard reports the virus acting as a nerve agent with the brain stem.
If it has skin to skin contact that would be similar to a blister agent without the blisters (interesting it can last up to 9 days on surface).
Am I missing any agents.
