How do we know that people who had the flu up until now did not have the COVID19 strain if we never tested for it? I mean, ITS THE FLU. I will apologize if I am wrong, but this whole thing is absurd to me. 56,000 die a year from complications due to the flu. Again, how do we know that this particular strain did not exist before.
Again, I apologize in advance if I am being ridiculous. I have been traveling this week. Nobody is wearing masks. I am in a plane right now. Plane is full from DC to Las Vegas. Dont let a good crisis go to waste. The Dems would like nothing more than to see the economy crash. And they may get their with if the flaming harpies on TV keep up their hysterical shreaks. OK.. Rant over.
Sometimes I feel so stupid askiing but am grateful for the responses.
More than belief. Its a fact.
As others point out, this new coronavirus is not influenza. Still, it seems quite possible that some recent flu sufferers were actually struck by this new virus but, being mostly healthy, they assumed it was the annual flu. And remember: this new coronavirus was known about weeks before it became common knowlege (and the cause of our current worldwide hysteria). Many thousands of Wuhan-ers fled the city to escape the impending quarantine, and they spread themselves all over the world. The wealthier they were, the further they fled.
“Around Thanksgiving, I got upper respiratory and sinus crap so bad that my lungs were burning every time I coughed. Lasted for weeks”

I’m not sure that this usually goes on that long in most cases. What this things does is get down to the lower respiratory/lungs and settles in there, where it does the serious damage and invites pneumonia.
If a person does get it and feels fine, s/he is still looking at a minimum of 2 weeks self-quarantine so they can’t spread it.
I live in Puget Sound area and the local word is it's been here for +/- six weeks. I had a bout with 'flu' a month or so ago, it may have been that virus.
Duck Duck Go is a search engine, no different than Google. It retrieves sources, it isn’t a source in itself.
Where do you get your news if not the internet? The New York Times? WaPo? CNN? Fox News? NPR?
Thank you! Been waiting for you to expose who you really are
Bingo! The data set is way too small right now.
That is also false information because they don’t have a clue about people that are nearly asymptomatic. Additionally, I am still waiting for the demographic breakdowns - that is critical information they are hiding to ensure maximum panic.
They do test whatever is “going around,” certainly not in everybody but they sample to find out why the vaccinations are not working every year.
Ergo.
The death reported from reported cases and deaths. China does not report many of the deaths because they are diagnosed as “pneumonia,” and the WuHanFlu is ignored. Also many many people who are not deathly ill hide and avoid the authorities as going to the hospital may get one sent to the burners early.
SARS came to a Turkish village back in 03. The press reported that it was particularly deadly there because a third of those who were diagnosed died. An American Doctor went to that village shortly after and tested everyone in the village and discovered that everyone showed antibodies and almost everyone told him they had had sniffles or coughs and headaches. The reported death rate was apparently a bit misleading.
We will NOT have a reliable death rate for this thing until it has passed into history and the statistics from the Western countries where it spread are compiled.
B) In effect, yes. Very expensive, but very impressive results:
It is a lot smarter to ask than to remain ignorant! No one can be well informed on (or even remember) everything.
One o’ these days I should read “When HARLIE Was One” again.
:-)
ear goo?
Not ridiculous! Excellent point!
Hi Hildy!
The Wuhan virus is the seventh coronavirus in history that is know to infect humans. In animals for centuries, they can mutate and pass to us. Four that recur every year are responsible for the common cold. There are two other “panic” coronaviruses, which cause SARS and MERS. I don’t mind if people panic. The death toll so far from this panic is almost certainly near zero.
Most of our confusion around FR comes from trying to do the epidemiology without first doing the virology/etiology. When you know how the virus behaves you can anticipate how it will spread and how many will get sick and how you will have to treat them. The word pandemic scares people, but it just refers to how many people in how many locations get it not how virulent or deadly it is.
Both SARS and MERS are much deadlier than COVID-19 at this point but if anybody wants to prep for it, why not?
Your question is an intelligent and good one and it goes to the real question on all our minds, Do I need to prepare to meet God?! (Wouldn’t hurt!) Usually people answer that by referring to the “death rate” which is always higher in the beginning stages because you don’t know the denominator. That is what you are pointing out. That nasty diarrhea you got last month could’ve been anything!
There are reasons to think it was not COVID-19 though, because you can compare what is happening in the world today with the history of epidemics and pandemics. You were sick like a lot of people, but if you had this novel coronavirus then also there would be folks dying of viral pneumonia at your local hospital with lungs that showed the virus. In other words compare the beginning of this epidemic with the beginning of others like it.
They knew it was a corona virus right away because they saw using electron microscopy the spikes of the crown all around it. Next question is how is it killing people?
Some are getting deep lung viral pneumonia which can kill your lung cells or it can cause you to die of one of your co-morbidities like heart problems or whatever else is currently in process of killing you. Here is where it comes in that the flu kills however many people each year.
Some however are getting the “cytokine storm” which may have been what killed so many in 1918. They die so quickly you can’t help them. This is where it comes in that the Asians are getting it. There is a particular helper-2 T-cell that seems to be responsible and those families that genetically over produce it, they need to really not get this thing.
Some people have the virus with NO symptoms
Some people have the virus and get a little sick but get better. Then they get sick again. Some test negative, leave and return and test positive. Are they reinfecting? Is the virus hiding from the test? Some viruses can do that.
Some people get sick with the virus but do not get a fever. This is different from SARS and explains why the initial infection rates were wrong. If you came in sick but did not have a fever they assumed that you didn’t have COVID-19. But then non-febrile patients showed a SARS like CT lung scan and were found to have the virus. So now if you cough they do a CT and if it looks like that SARS pneumonia they will declare you infected.
There is a ruling principle at work here, the easier it is to get it the less deadly it is. The deadlier it is the harder it is to spread it. The way ebola works is when you realize that people in your village are dying, you try to run away but you die on the path before you even can get to the next village. With influenza, there are people beside you at work sneezing and coughing and thinking about maybe going home.
Tell me how I did Hildy. Did I help at all? Where am I wrong? Thanks everybody in advance for any correction and contradiction.
I don’t think you are being ridiculous.
