Digital Brief: EU police want your faces
EurActiv ^ | Feb 27, 2020 | Samuel Stolton

Police forces in the European Union are planning to establish an interconnected bloc-wide network of facial recognition databases, leaked documents have revealed.

An EU Council report, first obtained by The Intercept, circulated among 10 member states last November, details measures led by Austria to legislate for the building of a network of facial recognition databases that could be used and accessed by police forces across the bloc.

EurActiv saw a copy of the leaked documents, which find that certain member states in the EU lag behind in the implementation of their facial recognition databases for networking purposes, and states that the “legal and technical prerequisites to link national Facial Recognition databases…should therefore be created as quickly as possible to enable the use of this investigation instrument at EU level.”

Meanwhile, a contingency of Renew MEPs have pressed the Commission for more details on the plans. EurActiv caught up with a couple of them to hear about their concerns.

“Just a few weeks ago the Commission was said to consider a temporary ban on the use of facial recognition for law enforcement,” Dutch MEP Sophie in ‘t Veld told us. “Now it wants to push ahead with it head over heels, and like a thief in the night. What happened? The Commission should drop its technocratic approach to these things. This is not a mere technical matter, to be quickly arranged behind the back of citizens and by rushing it through Parliament.” …

Of course, there can’t be any refugee mugs in the database. Because that would be racist!

The whole “refugee” debacle was, ultimately, a crisis precipitated by the EU itself to impose a draconian “solution” such as this.

If a fecal recognition system were useful to their purposes, they’d institute that too.

I don't know much about IT, but one would think that in a free-market system there would be many start ups and IT companies developing ways to defeat the ever increasing loss of privacy. The idea that I could walk into a store, be instantly recognized by facial recognition, and then have my purchasing preferences, credit score, and finances instantly known by the store, is beyond creepy. I could easily see stores concentrating salespeople efforts on those customers that appear most ‘favorable’ based upon their facial recognition - based profile.

Yes, but that’s ST, not IT.

“Europe will be forged in crises, and will be the sum of the solutions adopted for those crises.”

— Jean Monnet, EU founding father
They’ve stated this openly over and over.

The EU is a “social market” rather than a free market; they even openly state that their “internal market” as they call it is a “highly-competitive social market economy”. It’s basically the continuation of the Bismarckian “state socialism” that lasted even throughout the national-socialist tyranny.

Well, half the refugees are already immune to this because of their face rags.

The EU is setting up the infrastructure and databases for the very same “social credit” system used in China and designed by Google.

The way it works in China, everything is controlled by a person’s “social credit score”.

Said something the gov doesn’t like on social media? Score goes down. Rat on someone to the gov, score goes up. Say something the gov doesn’t like while in your own home? Score goes down.

Social credit score determines where a person can shop, whether or not they can use mass transit, get permission to travel, whether or not their bank cards will even be honored and whether or not they have access to banks for cash.
