IT update. I’ve worked in three industries: Telecom, Banking, and Hospitals. I also ran my own company.
IT Update is a synonym for a horrible weekend.
Even when I did them in my own company...I WAS the IT guy. I screwed them up.
“Update” bad.
“Upgrade” worse!
During my time at First Virtual Holdings, Inc we had 50,000 user accounts in a UNIX filesystem managed with TCL code as a database. For scalability, we decided to convert to Sybase. The conversion plan was 142 steps and had to go flawlessly. Our motto that weekend was, "Boring is good". It was a flawless, boring conversion.
Marshall Rose was a big fan of TCL at that time. As such, I had to write all the auth/settlement network code to First USA Paymentech in TCL. It ran on a Windows NT 3.5 machine communicating with their Stratus/VOS system. It got a VERY THOROUGH code review. Once in service, we never needed to touch it again.
