Tony Romo made about $127 million as an NFL quarterback. He's on his way to making more than that as an NFL broadcaster.
CBS and Romo have agreed to a multi-year contract worth approximately $17 million per season, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported, via sources informed of the deal.
The New York Post first reported the news.
With Romo's rookie deal set to expire, CBS avoided a potential bidding war with the most coveted football broadcaster by making him the highest-paid ever. In fact, his new contract is worth about twice as much as the reported high of $8 million for John Madden.
The former Cowboys quarterback will also be earning more on an annual basis as a color commentator than he made in all but three seasons of his 14-year career. Romo went straight from the playing field to the broadcast booth in 2017 and instantly made his mark alongside esteemed partner Jim Nantz with his penchant for accurately predicting plays.
The 39-year-old has since proven to be just as bankable on TV as he was in the league.
He’s no Staubach, no SB rings, but he can jabber.
Under the new CBA under consideration , everyone benefits except the fans. Grab the dough while ya can, Tony.
>>I’ve always like Romo. He’s a good guy.<<
He is a heck of an analyst. His ability to predict offense plays is uncanny. I think I recall a game where they kept a tally of his predictions and the accuracy rate was 90+%
By the numbers he was a good QB — even great. But the most important numbers: post season wins, were lacking. Great QBs win. Period.
He may be a good guy, but he is annoying as an announcer...always trying to predict the next play call
At least as a broadcaster it isn’t so important that he not take a vacation to Mexico with Jessica Simpson the days before a playoff game.
the commercials are already too frequent, too long and makes games unwatachable along with the crappy commentary...
I expect money-grubbing CBS (see last Dem debate) to make ads even longer and more frequent to recoup this deal
Don Meredith must be spinning in his grave.
Dallas is so f—king stupid. They could have easily had Romo come in as a coach. Instead they hired that POS McCarthy who wasted Rodgers’ prime years.
I agree. Knows the game, knows the plays, and provides depth and perspective.
As to his ability, repetitive injuries--to his back IIRC--kept him from realizing his full potential.
BTW, I am a pretty good armchair analyst.
They can hire me for 10% of what they pay Romo.
Just sayin’ ;)
Do you look good with TV makeup? Part of the job requirement.
Schadenfreude.
If you really want to know what is going on in a game, you want to have Romo on the microphone. He is the best, and I don’t care if he can’t tell folksy stories like Don Meridith.
I have never understood the fascination with a journeyman QB who has diarrhea of the mouth! In addition, his ‘sound-effects’ make me crazy!
He threw key interceptions in key games, too!
Will sanders bitch and moan about the obscene salaries that media types get?
Yeah, usually in playoff games.

Dang! There goes that!!!!!
Yeah, his stats were amazing, but he could not win the big ones.
Let’s face it — winners win. Favre did not have great stats but came through in the clutch. Need I note Brady?
And I SLOWLY became a Mahomes fan. It was his performance in the critical part of the games — even before the SB that got my admiration, which I do not give lightly.
Romo just choked when he needed to get ‘er done.
Not always but definitely a better announcer than a quarterback.
I think he and the other guy make a great team of announcers. They actually talk about the game/play at hand. They dont reminisce about obscure trivial stuff that no one cares about. Such as this coach is actually two days older than the other coach but has 6 more games on Monday night and is related the custodian at the high school where neither of them went what a coincidence
