According to reports, Disney cut a kissing scene from its upcoming Chinese release of Mulan, because Chinese censors demanded the change.
The original cut of the film included a romantic scene in which the lead character Mulan (Liu Yifei) shared a kiss with her love interest, Chen Honghui (Yoson An).
But Chinese officials reportedly told Disney that the scene doesnt feel right to the Chinese people, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
It was very beautiful, but the China office went, No, you cant, that doesnt feel right to the Chinese people. So we took it out. director Niki Caro told the paper.
Hollywood has for many decades railed against censorship in the U.S., claiming that it is a strike both against a filmmakers First Amendment rights, not to mention his artistic integrity.
But now, it appears that Hollywood is jumping immediately to the self-censorship when cuts are demanded by China, one of Hollywoods biggest markets.
As to Mulan, the film had already irked Chinese officials when star Liu Yifei announced support for the pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong.
The rising star took to Chinas version of Twitter last year saying, I support the Hong Kong police; you can beat me up now. What a shame for Hong Kong and adding the hashtag #IAlsoSupportTheHongKongPolice.
Some in China called for a boycott of the film over Yifei statement.
However, eventually, the controversy blew over.

Breitbart has jumped the shark. Most Asian countries dislike public displays of affection between men and women even while they have a robust sex industry going on.
People are weird.
Boycott this movie. Actress supports police brutality against people wanting freedom.
Years ago I watched Love Actually on a flight back from Europe. I thought it was pretty good. I rented a copy to show to the family at home. I was horrified to discover that the airline version had been greatly “sanitized”.
Nice about page!
As to your last paragraph, there was a scene in a gay bar in Bohemian Rhapsody, that showed men in dog collars being led around. I had to close my eyes or be sick.
“Was it a gay kiss? “
Unless one of them transgendered, the answer is no.
Yoson is a guy and Liu is a girl, a rather cute girl when she smiles.
I do not object to the Chinese policy. IMO what really spoils a movie is just about any raw or perverted sex scene. For some reason Hollywood has just got to throw that crap into a movie or TV show. The T & A shown today would have been X rated before the 60’s cultural revolution.
We watched a classic Errol Flynn movie the other day with a romantic scene. He kissed his girl near a bed, then the scene changed to something else. What was accomplished here is it was obvious they made love, only without the pornography.
I’ve also noticed foreign films to not have all the raw sex Hollywood does.
There is no reason movies couldnt be released with multiple ratings. The companies would make significantly more profits as proven by popularity of the few decent films released. The technology already exists; however, producers are more interested in promoting filth and propaganda.
