Won’t get as many eggs with corn. I got fertilized eggs from a neighbor and borrowed an incubator from another neighbor and hatched these hens. Did 6 and ended up with 2 deaths, 1 rooster and three hens which is about what we wanted. I think having a rooster around makes the hens lay a little better plus they watch over the hens. These are Black Australorps I think. Either that or New Hampshire. I need to look at pics again now that they’ve feathered out and gotten bigger. Neighbor bought them as part of a brown egg layer/dual purpose breed discount package and isn’t sure of the breeds.

We’ve had to rebuild our flock. We have a larger farm and just lost a LGD to cancer. We are training his replacements and have lost birds during the transition (hawks and foxes) The pups now have a big bark and we’re aren’t losing birds now. But I have a few more chicks growing in my garage right now.

They definitely lay better with layer pellets. When they slow down or are molting mealworms gives them a boost too.
