Mapping coronavirus, responsibly

Coronavirus (Covid-19) has, to date (February 25th 2020) infected over 77,000 Chinese citizens, mostly in Hubei Province, since it was first identified in December 2019. It has so far spread to more than 30 countries. It has claimed more than 2,600 lives and been declared a global emergency by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

We’ll focus just on data for China in the following series of maps. They are designed to look like small maps you might find on a news media web site. Relatively simple, and with just the basic facts. Many of the issues I’ll note are equally applicable whether you’re making a small static map or an interactive web map.

This is a nice article that describes the issues involved in mapping the distribution of corona virus cases. It shows how the cartographer's choices change the view and our perception.

Again, what gets me is the number of links in the chain of information about this virus that are vulnerable to overwhelming deep state or communist influence.

And funny how it seems just perfect for the far leftist radical appetite, and for the deep state schemes.

Exactly timed for when impeachment failed.

So let’s be scientific about it.

How do we know what’s really true?

it’s all politics now:

Obama Ebola czar rips Pence for controlling health officials ...
Axios - 5 hours ago
The Obama administration’s Ebola response coordinator Ronald Klain tore into the White House Thursday over a report in the New York Times...

I’m watching Rachel, who is doing an amazing job of bringing us up to speed on info which our own govt should have been telling us. It’s worrisome, seeing how this is spreading & knowing that we have no one in control of the govt’s response, & no reason to trust what they do say...
https://twitter.com/RonaldKlain/status/1233212704099360768

clearly unqualified:

Wikipedia: Ron Klain is an American political operative and lawyer. He served as chief of staff to two U.S. vice presidents – Al Gore (1995–99) and Joe Biden (2009–11), and served as the United States Ebola response coordinator in late 2014 into early 2015...
Klain joined the Clinton-Gore campaign in 1992 and was involved in both of Bill Clinton’s campaigns. He oversaw Clinton’s judicial nominations, and was General Counsel to Al Gore’s recount committee in 2000 election...

During Klain’s tenure as Gore’s Chief of Staff, he was seen as too loyal to Clinton by some longtime Gore advisors, and in 1999, feuding broke out between Clinton and Gore loyalists. Klain was ousted by Gore campaign chairman Tony Coelho in August 1999...In 2000, Klain returned to the Gore campaign...
Klain was signed up as a lobbyist for Fannie Mae until 2005 whom he helped overcome “regulatory issues”...
On November 12, 2008, Roll Call announced that Klain had been chosen to serve as Chief of Staff to Vice President Joe Biden, the same role he served for Gore...

On October 17, 2014, Klain was appointed the “Ebola response coordinator” or, less officially, Ebola “czar” by President Barack Obama, to help coordinate the nation’s response to the Ebola virus. His appointment was criticized because he “has no record or expertise in Ebola specifically or public health in general”...

Good question. At some point we need to trust somebody or we can't analyze anything. Like all organizations, the WHO has biases. My take is that the cartographer was trying to show us that we need to watch to see how different visualizations can emphasize different aspects of the data and change the way we interpret the results. I spent a lot of time working with statisticians who tried to help us properly interpret complex data sets like this. Many in that communtiy run through the analysis themselves to see how different assumptions or models change the results. This is how modern science works, especially with Open Access data.

I am not surprised that there are biased people trying to change the narrative. The best disinfectant for such a situation is publicly available data.

We will never have exhaustive information. The best we can do in this situation is to carefully examine the available data and draw the best conclusions we can. We draw tentative conclusions and test them as more data comes in. This is science in the era of large datasets describing complex problems.

Great article. Thanks. Here is the key point that everyone should see:

In other words, the cases are concentrated in Hubei province.

The other is that in Hubei the incidence is 111 cases/100,000 people, in other words 1 in 1000.

Just to keep it all in perspective.

About 30 million Americans get the Flu each year (and that’s with vaccinations being available)...there appears to be less than 100K folks world-wide with coronavirus after several months...I find that heartening.
