In fact this is the reason Hitler had such a mustache. He was a soldier in WW I and had to wear his mustache short so his gas mask would have a good seal. He kept it as a reminder to the people that he had served honorably in the Great War.

Actually what the CDC is posting is correct.

If you have ever looked at old Civil War photos you see most of them have beards and mustaches. It wasn’t until WWI that the army regulations mandated soldiers be clean shaven so the gas masks would fit right and make a good seal. That is why the Army to this day still mandates a clean shaven face.

There may be masks out there that can be worn with beards but I have never seen one.
