Powerful Santa Ana winds blew through Southern California on Wednesday morning, including a 106 mph gust that may be the highest ever recorded in San Diego County, according to forecasters.
The strong gust was recorded about 1:50 a.m. in Sill Hill, a typically "very windy" location nestled in the San Diego mountains...
Nine other locations in the county had also recorded winds of 70 mph or above as of 5 a.m., according to the weather service's San Diego office. The forecast called for some foothill areas to be battered by gusty winds of 60 to 80 mph.
Offshore winds weren't as powerful elsewhere in Southern California, but still have reached up to 57 mph in Orange County's Santa Ana Mountains and Apple Canyon in Riverside County, 58 mph in Grand Terrace, and 51 mph in some coastal valley areas of Ventura County, NWS reported.
Winds in L.A. and Ventura counties are expected to be the strongest Wednesday, with possible gusts between 40 and 50 mph.

Well that blows.
Here in the LA basin, such winds are known as Santa Ana winds. In Ventura County to the west of LA, they’re called east winds.

When I visited my friend in Santa Paula, folks there always called them east winds—and they could be quite strong as they blew down the Santa Clara Valley, sometimes fanning nasty brush fires.
Here in North Orange County today, there was no wind, but it was pleasantly warm—83 degrees—for February.
The wind gusts were from the democrat politicians visiting the area.
Cue the Steely Dan/Babylon Sisters ...
they were rough! I dunno how, but those winds lifted and tore out two corrugated panels of our side patio - that has withstood winds for 40 years. Must have been a not-so-mini dust devil
Well I live part time in the harbor in Ventura and everyone there, including me, calls them Santa Anas. I’ve never heard 1 person call them east winds.
