Clive Cussler, a popular author and sea explorer, died on Monday, his family announced in a Facebook post.

"I want to thank you, his fans and friends for all the support, for all the good times and all the adventures you have shared with him," she wrote. "He was the kindest, most gentle man I ever met. I have always loved him and always will. I know, his adventures will continue."

He published more than 50 during his career, two of which were later made into movies -- "Raise the Titanic," released in 1980, and "Sahara," in 2005. His books were published in more than 40 languages in over 100 countries, according to his website.

But Cussler wasn't just a novelist. He was so passionate about maritime discoveries, he even started a nonprofit dedicated to them National Underwater and Marine Agency, a volunteer foundation dedicated to "preserving our maritime heritage through the discovery, archaeological survey and conservation of shipwreck artifacts,"

I imagine Dirk Pitt will be crushed. Even if he survives (as, for example, Jack Ryan did), he will no longer be the man he used to be.

They never found the right actor to bring that franchise to the screen which is too bad.

There may have been a thing with Cussler injecting himself into the process too much.

Who would be the prime candidate for that daunting role?

Plus, you'd have to get beat up a lot. On the other hand, the babes would be magnificent.

Very much so.

The movie, needed work.

I still remember the submersible imploding.

I always liked that plot device - showed he didn’t take his writing TOO seriously.

I used to be an avid reader of his until he started promoting man made global warming in his books

Lots of the time when you get a nice pile, you start getting whacky ideas from the thin atmosphere crowd.

"Enjoyed his books in the early days when he still wrote them. After a while everything was being ghostwritten by others and they got pretty awful.

I've heard the same about Wilbur Smith books.

He led the effort that eventually found and raised CSS Hunley.

That's I thought that this was more news than chat.

Suppose I should count my blessing that it only got got demoted...   winking face

R.I.P. Mr. Cussler. Read a great many of your books and thoroughly enjoyed them.

May the Lord Bless your soul.

My hubby introduced me to Cussler’s books.
He’ll be sad to hear of Cussler’s passing.

Yes...different time. Now, he would be a toxic male.

In one of his early books he posited the mass invasion of illegals from south of the border, way before it actually happened. You wouldn’t be able to write something like that today without being condemned for being a hater.

“They never found the right actor to bring that franchise to the screen which is too bad.”

So true. Matthew McConaughey, while a good actor, was not a good Dirk Pitt. And the guys they picked for Rudy and Admiral Sandecker were terrible choices.

Same is true for the Jack Reacher (Lee Child) movies. Tom Cruise is a terrible Jack Reacher. I have discussions from time to time on who would be a good Jack. Maybe Jason Statham, Aaron Eckhart, or maybe even John Cena. Anybody but Cruise. Not saying he is a bad actor, he just ain't Jack Reacher.

Did these casting people even read the books?

Well, ol' Clive certainly got his fair share of the pie before he sailed into the sunset.

Was closing in on 90.

And who can forget Dirk Pitt’s orange Doxa dive watch, which survived many a peril. (Cussler’s own watch.)

He started writing in 1965, beating Clancy by a couple decades.

Good escapism stuff.

Always enjoyed reading Clive’s earlier work and I still have all of his books that I bought. At one point, his plot line became a little too over the top as he tried to out do his last novel. Can’t remember the title of the book where he had Dirk going to the moon but it seemed at that point Clive realized the non-plausibility of what he was writing and he dialed it back and made the series enjoyable again. Kind of lost interest in his works once the ghost writers stepped in and he started spinning off other works that didn’t have his alter-ego Dirk in. RIP Clive and thanks for the many hours of enjoyment in the fictional universe that you created.
