Did a dog receive more justice in N.J. than a survivor of sexual assault? | Opinion

Just a few days ago, Aaron Davis, of Long Branch was sentenced to a year in prison for leaving a puppy in a cage alongside the water. His attorney, Adamo Ferreira, said, “The sentence was overkill. There was no reason to sentence Mr. Davis to jail. It’s a fourth-degree offense. This was his first indictable conviction.” Also a few days ago, Zachary Madle, a 23-year old from North Wildwood, admitted he engaged in non-consensual sexual contact with a barely-conscious woman and recorded the encounter on SnapChat and was sentenced to five years of probation. It was the longest term the judge could impose with that conviction.

Almost drown a dog, you get a year in prison.

Rape a woman and broadcast it on social media for others to see, you get probation.

Something here is very, very wrong.

In court, during Mr. Madle’s sentencing, the victim, who was 18 years old at the time of the assault, indicated that she wants to be a detective, “so I can help convict more rapists like you and advocate for more change in the criminal justice system because you should not be walking away with probation.” That’s not an uncommon refrain – survivors of sexual violence so disappointed by the “justice” system that they feel compelled to redirect the trajectory of their entire lives in order to create changes within the systems that failed them. But, is that their job?

“There was no reason to sentence Mr. Davis to jail.”

Right. I would have sentenced him to a severe caning.

The article does not mention the dog was left to be drowned in an apparant attempt to inflict suffering on the dogs owner.

It wasn’t “justice for the dog”. It was justice for the dog’s owner.

Was it Rape Rape? Or just Rape? Somebody axe Whoopee!

Let’s call it “Rape”. All these euphemisms just get in the way of clear understanding. “Sexual Assault” or “Sexual Violence” is too nebulous a term. Like maybe some clod didn’t use the “correct pronouns” or some bit of wankery like that.
