Why the Presidency Can’t Just Go Back to ‘Normal’ After Trump

SNIP

Here’s the problem: Many of these “presidential norms and traditions” that Trump has left by the wayside aren’t timeless at all; they’re actually quite new. They grew up alongside and in reaction to the expansion of both the federal state and the presidency—a process that began in the early 20th century but gained steam from the 1930s onward. With the growth of what Arthur Schlesinger Jr. called the “imperial presidency,” each occupant of the Oval Office has left his imprimatur on the development of what we think of as normative presidential conduct.

That means that whatever impact Trump has might not be so easy to undo.

Take, for example, three cherished institutions—White House news briefings, independent courts, nonpartisan law enforcement agencies and a nonpartisan civil service. Their foundations are more young and shaky than you might think, and once altered, they may not be easily restored. Future presidents may regard newer precedents as more binding. A once-sturdy nonpartisan civil service and equally assured nonpartisan courts may be too weakened to enforce a return to prior norms. A public once conditioned to expect certain things of its presidents may have lost a critical amount of muscle memory. In short, anyone who expects a restoration of the status quo circa 2017 may be in for a rude awakening.

Though at critical junctures—the Civil War, the Progressive era, World War I—it swelled temporarily in size and importance, the presidency for almost the first century and a half of its existence remained a limited office with a small staff and constrained purview over national affairs. That changed in the 1930s and through 1950s, as first the New Deal, then World War II and—finally—the Cold War necessitated a vast expansion of permanent federal authority and, with it, an increasingly powerful and autonomous executive branch.

I had read this whole article earlier and was surprised on how balanced it was. His whole point is that these “traditions” that everyone seems to be up in arms about are actually rather new constructs and are only seen as “forever” because none of us are 200 years old.

He also shows (without pointing out) that the worst of the traditions, the politically biased ones, were mostly started by dems.

As a former federal employee of: DoD, Census Bureau, V.A., there ain’t no such animal as a ‘non-partisan’ civil service! And that goes back to 1986!

Exactly. Non-partisan doesn’t mean non-ideological.

“...independent courts, nonpartisan law enforcement agencies, and a nonpartisan civil service.”

I believe that the dems have been undermining these institutions for decades and under 0bama all these rather independent agencies were replaced by partisan courts, law enforcement agencies and civil service.

I hope it doesn’t go back normal. That would mean the Deep State back in complete control.

"Here’s the problem- TDS Never Trumpers make up wild vague accusations, but NEVER give any specifics about he accusations-"

THAT's what the Rooskies are up to: making up and spreading content-less charges.

The cult of the presidency is funny. It reached it’s zenith with W. The above it all, dear leader, combining tribal leader with the daddy or husband half the nations women longingly pine for.

My favorite part of the cult of the presidency is the aging thing. “Look, his hair actually turned GRAY from the burden he carries”. Laughable, as though other men in their 50s don’t turn gray if watched for 8 years.
There has never been a human in the history of earth more pampered than a modern President. Louis XIV or mad king Ludwig never dreamed of the life of a President.

The best foods, from the best chefs, anytime, on a whim.
The best medical care a human can get, for free. A praetorian guard insulating him from every danger. Guaranteed fabulous wealth for life. The ability to vacation anywhere, as often as you want.

It really has become weird, far beyond the concept of a chief executive.

LOL. Thanks for my morning comedy minute! Never this mutt was a comedy writer”

I know right? These guys think ‘nonpartisan’ means when bureaucratic decisions always fall on their advantage. And non partisan law enforcement agencies as long as it’s not their partisan that’s in control. Independent courts unless it’s their guy controlling the courts. White House news briefings that are hostile to anyone but their guy.

They think that is somehow transparent and that people dont see it. They pretend that hostility and bias doesnt exist. If they had to endure the systematic partisanship and Self Censorship that we have to tolerate they’d have a wakeup call.

White House news briefings, independent courts, nonpartisan law enforcement agencies and a nonpartisan civil service.

They were independent and nonpartisan. ONLY in recent years with Klinton and Obummer have they been politicized and weaponized. Thats a fact. If this author is trying to sell anything else, he is lying.

He’s crushing Clinton’s records, too. When you hear from the overlords that “it can’t be done,” it means they have no intention or desire to do it. We always knew it and Trump proved it.

We have learned since there is no rule of law anymore that we can impeach their president if we have the House. If we have the Senate, too, we can remove their president.
