After my father's 90th birthday party, I flew back to Arizona this week. At U.S. Customs in the Vancouver airport, I was in a short line for people deserving extra-special scrutiny, probably because I checked in online with my Canadian passport rather than my green card -- I've made this mistake before. There were three people in front of me: a Chinese couple at the head of the line and another guy between me and them.
After determining where the couple is going (back to China), the immigration inspector asks, "How long since you were in China?" "Eight days" is the answer. Yikes, I think, especially because for unknown reasons they are returning, from Canada, through the U.S., to China. He has them use the fingerprint device, and then ushers them into the backroom for special screening. The guy in front of me and I are both freaking out, wondering whether it's time to take a bath in Purell. Fortunately, I wasn't asked for my fingerprints.
I've been checking the news ever since, to see if a Chinese couple passed through the Vancouver airport with coronavirus. Scary world.
