Two people were killed in a massive pileup involving about 200 vehicles on a busy highway south of Montreal, according to Canadian police.
Authorities confirmed that the two people, who have not been identified, had been traveling in the same vehicle when it collided with a tank truck on Wednesday during the 200-car pileup in La Prairie, Quebec.
Stéphane Tremblay, spokesperson for the Sûreté du Québec said the pair were trapped in their car for hours after the crash before emergency services could pull them from the wreckage.
'We know that these people were involved in a collision with a tank truck, which made the rescue operation more difficult for first responders,' she said.

RIP.
How awful. I was talking to a Canadian in Montreal some time back and he said they have two seasons: winter and road work. I guess winter causes road work.
I found that there was a 300 car pile up in Brazil.
This was a nasty one: https://www.usdeadlyevents.com/1991-nov-29-dust-storm-massive-i-5-pileup-near-coalinga-ca-17/
One of the drivers testified at deposition that she got out of her car to look at the damage after an initial minor collision, while leaving her two children in the back seat of her small sedan. While she was talking to the other drivers, a second more violent collision occurred trapping her children in their car and setting it ablaze. Her last memory of her children was of them calling out to her as they were dying. “Mommy, it’s so hot!”
Seems like some of the mayhem might be avoided by saner driving.

The RAT party is about a million car pileup.
I drove from Montreal to Quebec City in daytime white-out conditions a couple of weeks ago. A pileup like that could have easily occurred. People were driving way too fast for the conditions. They had to completely shut down the 4-lane highway for over 12 hours, east of Quebec City. due to the high winds along the St. Lawrence River. Scary stuff.
“Mommy, its so hot!”
Betcha the seat belts killed them.
If I recall correctly, the vehicle was crushed. Belts or no belts, it would have taken the “jaws of life” to extricate them. And they were not alone.
The article linked at post 8 gives a pretty good summary of what happened.
One might be led to think that there is something inherently wrong with the design of limited access highways since pileups happen very often. The design does not consider the human factor: drivers unwilling to adjust their speed to the weather conditions.
Dear Sweet Jesus.
Imagine trying to live with that.
Damn yankees don’t know how to drive in snow...
driving CA freeways in any inclement weather, but especially fog, is a real horror show. Drivers will drive 80 mph into blind fog without giving it a second thought. Even getting off of the road will not help. No one will slow down until it is too late. absolute insanity
Need more global warming to prevent tragedies like this.
If you have never seen French Canadians drive you don’t know how right you are. 80 seem to be cruising speed.
Now everyone needs to go easy on winter drivers in Atlanta. We’ve never made one that spectacular.
“Dear Sweet Jesus.
Imagine trying to live with that.”
That was my first thought too.
