Debut episode, in which we meet our heroine, Mary Hartman, and her assorted friends and family members. While Mary worries whether her kitchen floor has developed a waxy yellow buildup, her best friend and next-door neighbor Loretta arrives with some shocking news. But that's not the only shocking news Mary will receive before the episode is over. . .

I remember watching this show with my mother when I was a young teen. Never understood why Mary was always rubbing her forefinger back and forth across her teeth.... didn’t know the actress was addicted to cocaine.
I didn’t know that, either!
Loved that show.
Funniest act in the show was when Bert believed he was invisible. He’d snap his fingers and wiggle his hands in a funny way and - shabang - he believed he was invisible.
Now, fast forward to today when certain very mentally challenged folks think they just have to say that they “identify” as....
SOAP was funny. Today’s sickies are not.
We loved that show......Hub would come home from work and I’d have him a sammich or something to eat and we’d watch that show. It was so outrageously funny. I just ordered the boxed set.....I don’t know why but I did. I’m telling Hub to fire up the Blu-ray.....we have some reminiscing up to do.
Fernwood 2 Night was hilarious. Martin Mull, Fred Willard and Frank DuVal.
DuVol, Sorry!
I loved Mary Hartman but my all time favorite was SOAP!!!
She was married to Woody Allen.
I suppose it was a good thing they didn’t adopt any kids.
A classic.
Up there with Barney Miller.
My favorite episode was the night a guy drowned in a bowl of Chicken Soup.
Forgot all about Barney Miller GREAT show!!! Very talented writers back in the day not so much anymore!!! I do like Last Man Standing very funny show!!!
I was 10 at the time. I did not understand the show, or pretty much any of the mid-70s sitcoms. They were all set in urban settings, and I had never been to a big city. Still don’t like them.
My mom used to watch that. Her and my sister. They WOULD NOT miss it for anything. They thought it was tastefully inappropriate ... or something. I could not figure out why she loved it so much.
Guess I should watch it and see if I missed something.

Soap operas make me want to get away from the TV as much as any other type of program.
Both of Louise Lasser’s parents committed suicide.
Wow. That’s a tough road to overcome. Sorry to hear that.
Mine, too,! I loved the Colonel hauling around his stuffed bull terrier on wheels!
Actor Victor Kilian, who played Grandpa Larkin (aka “The Fernwood Flasher”) met a violent end. He was murdered at the age of 88 by a couple of thugs who were burglarizing his apartment.
