Ryan Newman alert and walking, as Roush Racing says he 'continues to show great improvement'

Ryan Newman is fully alert, walking around the hospital and joking with staff two days after his frightening crash on the final lap of the Daytona 500.
Roush Fenway Racing said Wednesday the 42-year-old driver "continues to show great improvement." The team added that "true to his jovial nature, he has also been joking around with staff, friends and family while playing with his two daughters."
The team included a photo of Newman standing in a hospital gown, smiling with his arms around his two young daughters.

Now somebody just needs to figure out how to protect drivers from other drivers.
I understand it's "just racing" but there needs to be penalties for blocking and spinning others out.
It'll take a death before NASCAR does anything about it.

Not enough of a racing fan to know any better, but sometimes accidents just happen, and there's not much you can do about that. I think most drivers wouldn't be in favor, they know the risks they take on when they become drivers, and being aggressive is in their nature, I don't think there's a way to totally eliminate the risks.
