Can't recall the exact words but there was a scene in the first Death Wish when Charles Bronson said to his young son in law: "we are all so civilized and law abiding but we claim that if push came to shove we would fight hard to protect our loved ones just like the caveman days. But are we still able? Is that strength left in us or is it gone and we are now too civilized to do anything?"

That scene was always important to me.
