Virus tests to be expanded with take-home kits
Health authorities on Tuesday announced a major expansion in tests for the new coronavirus, aimed at enabling them to identify infected patients more quickly.
Starting on Wednesday, any adult patients who turn up to public hospitals or outpatient clinics with a fever and respiratory symptoms, or signs of pneumonia, will be asked to take marked containers home, and deliver a saliva sample back to the hospital or clinic the next day.
Authorities explained that they need to try to cough up some phlegm from deep within their throats first thing in the morning before they eat or brush their teeth, to increase the chances of an accurate diagnosis.

Would be interesting to know how many of the people who had mild symptoms had been receiving flu shots every year.

Get us out of here! Dave Abel on the Diamond Princess says hard to watch other countries rescuing their citizens, feel abandoned and - the WHO IS RECOMMENDING THEY NOT BE SENT BACK TO THE UK:

breaking - Dave Abel and his wife just received word of positive test results. Will be transferred to hospital in Japan. - update - He has posted again that he’s not being taken to a hospital, but to a hostel, where he will be with his wife. But he is questioning the test results and demanding to be retested. Thinks it’s a setup. They’ve not been out of their cabin and have not opened the door to get their food until the stewart has moved on, but they have been on their balcony.
have you noticed that the name has gone from corona virus, cov-19, to coronary virus without so much as a whisper?
Japan to trial HIV medications on coronavirus patients

“Doctors in Thailand said they appeared to have success in treating severe cases of the coronavirus with a mix of flu medications and HIV drugs.
“The new approach combining flu drug oseltamivir — also known as Tamiflu —, as well as lopinavir and ritonavir...
“A 2004 study in the BMJ showed the combination reportedly had a “favourable clinical response” when given to patients who had severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), which is often compared with coronavirus.”
I have a suggestion - embargo flights from Japan quick, their management of the cruise ship shows they have no clue
It seems Mr Abel has a poor understanding of viral transmission.
A video from China showed a road stop with a guy using what seemed like a mouth thermometer on people trying to cross in. Couldn’t see it but the movement of his hands seemed to be.
I have to admit ignorance about China. Do they get flu shots there?
Anyway, the reason why it is irrelevant is that this is a “novel” corona virus—meaning it is virus that has not been seen before. That means that there is no idea how it is spread or how it attacks the system. Of course, it was novel in December when they discovered it—not so novel now.
Long story short—your measles or smallpox vaccine has just as good a chance as stopping this—zero (in terms of added defense.)
Could you not see this coming from 100 miles away.
I listened to some guy on the TV this morning who was almost indignant sounding. I cringed.
If this gets to the US the entitled, reddit raised class of idiots who think they are smarter than a virus will be screaming from the rooftops.
Part of me cringes, and yet there is a part of me who witnesses them being “warned” every day.

Hey, dude in the video, no gloves and touching your face isn’t very smart. Neither is going out without eye protection and how about at least putting that hoodie over your head.
