That’s impressive...most of the State Flagship schools are much more than that; $12k /$20k in-state...

And yet a degree at a “flagship” school has very little benefit on your lifelong earning potential over a degree from a state college. Certainly not enough of an impact to warrant putting yourself in debt fo 15-20 years.

I would say society has a large part of how student loans came about. Every pinhead company thinks every job needs a college degree. Some idiot got their degree and demanded everyone else follow their arrogant self. It snowballed. Now simple jobs like recruiter and HR bimbo requires a degree.

Most employers look for the degree and don’t pay attention to GPA.

Clearly not true. Many resumes are tossed by HR if the GPA is not above a certain threshold for certain unprotected minorities( white males ). Usually that threshold is 3.0 or better.

So the next thing I would do is put a federal cap on tuition. Any tuition charged above the federal cap must be privately funded, hopefully by the learning institution.

My first experience with the job market out of college the first question was always “what is your GPA”? My friends had the same experience. But what do I know...

What time did you get up to deliver papers in junior high? How many hours a week did you work since 14 to save for college?

They didn't and they might have worked a few hours but not many.

That is because paper delivery is mostly done by adults (less chance of getting sued) and to get a job when you are under 18 is dependent on your getting a work permit that is given or withheld by the public school board on their whim.

Yes, if you are home, chartered, public, private or even have already graduated you are not allowed to get a job without that permit. And if you do get it and your boss is impressed with your work and wants to give you another type of job then you must trot back to the school board hat in hand and humbly ask for permission to take a new position.

At least that is the way it is in my state. Hiring the under 18 is such a pain in the neck that most employers will not do it. According to the wisdom of the government the under 18 crowd should only do "non-profit" work, which some of them are requiring for the kids to graduate at all.

“I got $100,000 in student loan debt myself,” California Rep. Eric Swalwell bemoaned

Is it true he majored in Gender studies, and failed?

my daughter has 250k in student loans. that is after we paid entirely for her undergrad and paid her living expenses in grad school. Many of her classmates have double her debt.

She is in a profession where she will be able to pay every penny and she’ has already started to do so. When one takes student loans like that the first criteria is are you in a program of study that will allow you to pay them back. If not sorry. no loan
