International Womens Day arrives on March 8, and NBC Sports Network will celebrate by using an all-female crew to broadcast and produce game coverage of the St. Louis Blues vs. Chicago Blackhawks National Hockey League matchup.
The game will mark the first NHL contest broadcast and produced solely by women in the US.
Kate Scott (play-by-play) will call the action alongside US Olympic gold medalists Kendall Coyne-Schofield (Inside-the-Glass analyst) and AJ Mleczko (analyst) from United Center in Chicago, Ill.
Kathryn Tappen will anchor studio coverage with three-time Canadian Olympic gold medalist Jen Botterill. Game production will be led by producer Rene Hatlelid and director Lisa Seltzer.
International Womens Day dates back over 100 years. Throughout the broadcast there will be nods to those who have made their mark on womens hockey and sports in general, with the goal of inspiring future generations of women to excel on the ice and behind the scenes.
In addition to the game elements, NBC Sports female-empowerment brand On Her Turf will surround coverage with content featuring women in hockey in various ways, including the Hockey is for Her digital video franchise and behind-the-scenes content through @OnHerTurf on Instagram.
Ive been broadcasting for 17 years, and yet, the very first broadcast I did with a female producer was just two years ago, said host Kathryn Tappen. The fact that we are celebrating International Womens Day with an all-female broadcast and production team tells me how far we have come in a very short time. We hope our broadcast will help inspire young women watching to follow their dreams, because weve proven that anything is possible, and Im proud to be a part of it.
Producer Rene Hatlelid added, These strong, accomplished women do this work day in and day out, and Im honored to be a part of this historic broadcast.
Producer Kaitlin Urka initially pitched the idea.We arent just bringing women together for the sake of bringing women together, Urka said. These are professionals who are some of the best at what they do and do these jobs on a regular basis. International Womens Day just gives us a unique platform to celebrate their great work.
Studio coverage will start at 7 p.m. ET on NHL Live and will continue immediately following the game with NHL Overtime.
Toe Blake, Dick Clapper, Eddie Shore, THOSE guys were the greats.
If this falls on national office supplies day I’m going to pass on it in favor of straightening out bent paperclips.
Why?
Ogie Oglethorpe... he’s out of prison?
Same here. “They” have to tinker with everything, whether it’s pussy hats or LGBTQXYZ+.
I actually don’t enjoy the female college FB announcer on one of the networks, I’m just used to hearing men announce it.
As an aside, I got a new issue of Architectural Digest and it’s all woke, too.
The Ivy League has seen to it that females are taking over the architecture departments so AD had a spread with quotes from them, saying nothing about design but spouting PC/diversity/inclusion/green talking points.
Quite amazing and disappointing, really.
Actually, thats exactly what youre doing. At least own it.
I have never watched anything but Nok Hockey a handful of times. Not knowing anything about hockey rules, I didn't even try to play a Nok Hockey game myself.
But I have heard of Wayne Gretzky, Bobby Hull and Boom-Boom Geoffrion because he was on the news in Atlanta years ago..
Wait - it’s just female announcers and crew? Why not at least 50% female players? If you’re gonna go woke, go woke!
Old Boom Boom..... the Flames were always De Flame lol.....
They could all become animal rights activists and show up at a Bernie event with no tops on....
Im so sick of virtue signaling and wokeness.
My favorite (the Roadrunner):

Not sure why this stuff is a thing. The TV production field has had women in it forever. But, yeah...good for them.
I thought sex discrimination in employment was illegal.

Im trying to watch a hockey game and you keep talking!
Easy. Just watch/listen to the game in 7.1 surround sound and just mute the center channel. Voila! (”walla” in Rio Vista). No announcers’ voices.
Super, eh?
(let me know if you want on or off the ping list)
Love that movie.
As opposed to the babbling dynamic d-bags Emrick and McGuire? Kendall Coyne knows the game, has good insights. I say give them a chance. Anything is an improvement over Emrick and McGuire. For that extra boost, I say introduce as a guest to the broadcast (aptly named) Don Cherry. That would be something...
