My son's girlfriend has a CDL and had been driving for years. He decided to give it a go. A week of study, then off to Iowa for training at TMC. He drove flatbeds with hay, huge coils of metal, lumber and other cargo. Long hours. Mostly living in his company owned truck. Never enough time for trips home. Even at that pace, he was earning half as much as he makes as a real estate broker. He's resumed the real estate broker mode. A little variety for guy with a BA in Business Admin and a 2nd BA in Physics. He was going to do the BS in Physics, but considered a teaching credential. The BA in Physics was sufficient to pursue the teaching credential. In the final analysis, teaching wouldn't yield any better income than driving the flatbeds.
The truckers have essentially stated that if asked to drive a load into an infected, quarantined area, they would not take the assignment. It just doesn't pay enough to risk your life.
