Ohio Groom and Groomsmen Run Relay the Morning of His Wedding

In most cases, if someone is sprinting away on their wedding day, it’s not a great sign. But David Ryland wasn’t a runaway groom in the traditional sense; he was just getting in one last race before tying the knot.

Last September, Ryland, 26, and a handful of his best friends ran the Akron Marathon as a relay just hours before his wedding ceremony began.

The Brecksville, Ohio, native was no stranger to the Akron Marathon, which he has finished twice as an individual as well as twice as part of a relay. As a competitive runner since his preteen years, the idea of racing before his wedding ceremony was exciting rather than daunting.

“It was such a great experience, especially because all of the members of my team grew up in Northeast Ohio and now all live in different states,” Ryland told Runner’s World. “The fact that they all made the time to fly to Ohio for a weekend to run and then be with me on my wedding day is something you cannot ask more for in friends and family.”

When Ryland originally decided to race that morning, he had planned on running the full marathon himself, but when he realized he wouldn’t have enough energy to tear up the dance floor later in the day, he opted for the relay.

“When I discussed running the full [marathon] with the race director, Brian Polen, he jokingly told me that I was not allowed and my name would be put on a blacklist,” Ryland said.

They probably ate up all the food at the reception. Three or four heaping plates each at a minimum.
