I ‘get’ that you were kidding the guy, but most people are compassionate enough that they would approve of a safe quarantine of the passengers.
A few thousand could be safely quarantined. Which would be enough for this ship.

Man, would I hate to be on that ship LOL!

People need to slow down. This is day 7 of their quarantine. We knew there was a group of about 270 on the ship who were potentially exposed. All of those infected should show symptoms within the first 12 days, with most being 3-7 days. There is no evidence these are “new” transmissions. We should see fewer new cases tomorrow, fewer the next day, etc, if the precautions are working. If the trend goes the other way, we have a big problem, but these cases seem to fit within the normal incubation period from the start of quarantine.

I wonder how fast the ship will be renamed after this is all over.
Psychologically no one is going to want to take a week cruise on that thing now, no matter how many gassings they do to sterilize it now.

“We knew there was a group of about 270 on the ship who were potentially exposed.”

Latest: “The cruise line has tested just over 490 out of the more than 3,700 passengers and crew on the ship so far, the Japanese Health Ministry said, and more tests will follow in the coming days.”

So about 35% of those tested have been positive - but those tested had symptoms that made them good candidates for testing.

I have an observation to point out about the cruise ship in Japan.

At some point this situation will end. All the infected people will be taken off the ship and sent to Japanese hospitals.

So what’s the conclusion to the quarantine? All the healthy, non-infected passengers were kept off of Japanese soil. All the infected passengers were sent ashore.

If the purpose of the quarantine was to keep the virus “out of Japan”, the end result will be the opposite. All the sick people go ashore and the healthy were kept out of Japan. Ironic.

Nobody will ever get on this ship again.

Yeah. "Book a thrill cruise on the S.S. Ebola" isn't going to work as a marketing ploy.

One possible strategy would be to break up the passengers and crew into isolated quarantine facilities individually or in small groups, but no such facilities exist for a group of that size, at least to my knowledge. The long disease cycle on this one is going to call for approaches we don't really have yet.
