Have yet to see a mutt run a 150-yard blind retrieve.
. . . and stomachs of iron.
Sounds like you're doing exactly right.
One mutt we had could identify different ball toys he had by our voice.
If I said, “Go get your football!”, he’d go get the fooball!
or “Go get the tennis ball!” he’d get that.
He astounded my father-in-law one day when he was visiting when my wife said, “Go get your leash!” to go for a walk, FIL said, “That dog ain’t gonna get no leash!”, AND AS SOON AS HE SAID THAT THE DOG COMES TROTTING DOWN THE HALL WITH HIS LEASH IN HIS MOUTH!...................
She busted out of her crate one day when I was at work, and went around the house collecting her leash, my mud boots, my hiking shoes, my indoor shoes, 3 dog toys, and my jacket. Stashed them all in her crate, and when I got home she was sitting proudly at the door of her crate.
Obviously she wanted to go for a walk. So we did.
We have a mutt with a lot of German Shepherd in her and yeah....this is her. And she’s almost 4. I just tell everyone she’s nuts. lol
You are correct about the attention and energy necessary for a Mal. Before the breeder allowed me to have one, he sat and interviewed me for two hours. He said this breed is not the type that you can put in the back yard and expect to get exercise. Mine is always busy, and goes with me everywhere I do. I am with her all her waking hours (16-18/day). She is always ready to go to the vet (we go in once a week to use their scales), the bank, post office, and pet store. It is our weekly routine. I take her to the vet so she doesnt get anxious when she has an appointment. She is protective of me, my family, my friends, and anyone I am with. But I have noticed when I meet someone new, she is always measuring them to make sure they are alright. I trust her judgment more than mine. Going to the bank and post office keeps reinforcing her training not to counter surf, despite them giving her treats.
