Sounds like you're doing exactly right.
You are correct about the attention and energy necessary for a Mal. Before the breeder allowed me to have one, he sat and interviewed me for two hours. He said this breed is not the type that you can put in the back yard and expect to get exercise. Mine is always busy, and goes with me everywhere I do. I am with her all her waking hours (16-18/day). She is always ready to go to the vet (we go in once a week to use their scales), the bank, post office, and pet store. It is our weekly routine. I take her to the vet so she doesnt get anxious when she has an appointment. She is protective of me, my family, my friends, and anyone I am with. But I have noticed when I meet someone new, she is always measuring them to make sure they are alright. I trust her judgment more than mine. Going to the bank and post office keeps reinforcing her training not to counter surf, despite them giving her treats.
