It was a historic 92nd Academy Awards with a first Best Picture recipient not in the English language in Parasite adding an element of surprise to a largely predictable winners list. There was something historic in the ratings for the 2020 Oscars too an historic low.
Last year, the Academy Awards bet on no traditional host, kicked off the night with an energetic performance by Queen and Adam Lambert, employed not hosts with Saturday Night Live pedigree (Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph) to do an opening monologue, kept the shows length under 3.5 hours and created a musical moment with Lady Gaga and Bradley Coopers performance of Shallow.
The result was the first ratings increase in five years, so the Oscars tried to replicate the formula Sunday: no traditional host, high-octane opening number by Janelle Monae. monologue by SNL alums Steve Martin and Chris Rock, and a surprise music performance by Eminem aimed at creating a buzzy moment.
But the ceremony, which clocked in at 3 hours and 35 minutes up from 3 hours, 23 minutes in 2019 could not repeat last years ratings turnaround, drawing 23.6 million total viewers and a 5.3 rating in the adults 18-49 demographic, based on Nielsens Live+Same Day Fast National ratings ordered by ABC. That is down double-digits from last years 29.6 million and a 7.7 rating of among adults 18-49.
Overall, the Oscars was the most watched entertainment special since last years ceremony, topping the Grammy Awards and Golden Globes in total viewers. Other broadcast networks didnt try to compete Sunday, with all airing repeats.

I noticed for the first time that the use of the word queer in describing someone is acceptable to the Hollywood crowd.
I’m surprised almost 24 million people watched this turd.
Really? 23.6 million people had nothing better to do than to watch pampered one-percenter millionaires hand out awards to each other?
He did. I lasted through that. Then they came back from a commercial break and I had Greta Thunberg blasting in my face. That's when I turned it off. I don't know why she was on there or what she was saying, and I didn't care.
Despite Brad Pitt's nonsense, I was glad to see he won. "Once Upon A Time In Hollywood" was awesome, and he was the best part of it.
The so-called stars have lost their mystique. Most of these people have zero charisma or wit, which is reflected in their performances, which makes their movies mediocre and forgettable. So many of them are awkward, vacuous and uninteresting. Many are also dressed and styled terribly. Very little of interest to see or hear from Hollywood these days.
i wonder how many turned it off when brad pitt made the first attack on trump?
There is ZERO reason to watch the Oscars. Many displays of hypocrisy, communism, self-absorption, wokeness and insults.
But it is mostly really boring, unless you are really star-struck.
It is the opposite of entertainment.

I watched a Last Man Standing rerun instead.
If you haven’t seen the show, Tim Allen plays a conservative dad who is only rarely wrong or goofy.
I enjoyed it thoroughly.
They were actually pretty funny
I tried.
My wife gives me crap because she says I make everything “political”.
So I turn on the Oscars about 10 minutes before the real show and see some red carpet - Brad Pitt, Charlize Theron and Leonardo DiCarpio. None of them said anything political...I felt encouraged...
Then the opening musical number. I vaguely recognized Janelle Monáe and felt bad for her that her blouse accidentally came unbuttoned. She sang “Won’t You Be My Neighbor” - walking up to Tom Hanks and putting her bowler hat on his head. Cute. Then she went into her “real” opening number and - after a bit - stopped singing to announce that she was a proud, black, queer woman. Click.
I do not like or dislike performers based on race, gender or sexual orientation. If you are a good singer, I really don’t care who you sleep with. TELLING me who you sleep with as a point of pride - especially if it is perverse - is TMI. I would have the same response to a straight performer who would stop in the middle of a song to say that he likes having sex with women. It is inappropriate and distracting.
Entertain me...don’t preach, don’t share, don’t try to change my mind.
No ones watching. Another Hollywood flop.
Only because Janelle Monae was referring to herself, I think.
Lexington Green made the best commentary about the Academy Award Ceremony: "Instead, Ill watch Dr. Pol stick his arm up a cows arse"
Great stress reliever!
In order to cut the viewership even more, have CNN Host and analyze the political speeches and social justice issues of the various nominees.
“Wolf what do you think of the lack of Iranian films amongst the nominees this year.”
Thanx Cooper. It’s a clear indication of the anti-muslim attitudes eminating from the WH and the Trump administration.” “Lets’ listen in to the next nominated song, Blues Over The West Wing from the Disney hit, He Will Soon Be Forgotten starring Robert DiNero and Joaquin Phoenix “ “Here’s humanitarian Barbara Streisand.”

I wasnt too wowed by Once. Could be because I lived thru it so it wasnt all that new or exciting. The acting was good by almost all the cast. Directing was ok. Just wasnt in the same league in my opinion as some of the others, particularly Parasite.
Congratulations.
You also just accurately described professional sports.
I might have been tempted to turn it on if Ricky Gervais was doing a monologue shredding their inflated egos to pieces.
Thanks. I found it on youtube and watched it right before I got your ping. They were pretty funny. Definitely worth watching.
