I see nothing in the press about it!
Unconvicted war criminal.
He was heavily involved in the Indian wars after the civil war so I doubt the media would have anything good to say about him.
The “Torch”.
Sherman: Total war waged on civilian populations. Why Southerners despise Yankees to this day.
OK, I laughed.
He said he wished the reporters were dead, but that there would probably be dispatches from hell by morning. You know he would just love our modern journalists.
He was a military college President in Louisiana, the subject is being covered in Homer J. Simpsons Civil War plus 160 threads:

Yes, he would. Probably the most infamous quote about “reporters”. IF he were a general today, he would be disgusted with this lefty crap.
War is the remedy our enemies have chosen. Other simple remedies were within their choice. You know it and they know it, but they wanted war, and I say let us give them all they want; not a word of argument, not a sign of let up, no cave in till we are whipped or they are.
William Tecumseh Sherman, in a telegram to Abraham Lincoln (September 1864)
Re: Quote in Comment #6
Is that a quote from Sherman?
I read it twice.
I do not see any attribution.
Bump
War’s hell.
What I find most fascinating about Sherman, was that during his famous Georgia campaign, he carried with him the relevant census reports from 1860.
With this information, his troops were able pinpoint the most prosperous farms. They were amazed at the amount of food and provisions that were NOT going to Confederate troops.
> Sherman: Total war waged on civilian populations. <
Curtis LeMay: Total war waged on civilian populations.
It can be argued that LeMay was worse as he deliberately targeted entire cities. LeMay meant to kill thousands of (Japanese) civilians. It was not Shermans policy to deliberately kill thousands of civilians.
If Sherman is some sort of war criminal, is LeMay one too? Or did both men just do what had to be done?
“Honest “ Abe’s Butcher-In-Chief.
May he rot in hell.
If former Confederates could go to the man’s funeral, then people in 2020 can seriously stop acting offended by any aspect of that conflict.
Sorry - I strongly disagree.
General Grant used the combat strategy that won every American war for the next 100 years...
Namely - massive superiority in firepower and logistics.
The South and Stonewall had no answer for that kind of war.
I think it is partially fair to say Grant's strategy did not work in Korea and Vietnam.
On the other hand, North Vietnam's ally - Russia - was a nuclear armed super power. And, North Korea's ally - China - had an infinite supply of manpower.
Consequently, I think it is partially un-fair to compare Grant vs. Stonewall to USA vs. North Korea and North Vietnam.
More importantly, so was Gary Coleman!

Different Strokes!
pure speculation. Everyone thinks victory in the Civil war for the South depended solely on the Army of Northern Virginia. The South had already lost 2/3s of it’s territory to the Union Army by the beginning of the 1864 Overland Campaign. I believe it was Sherman that made the comment that “Lee defended the front porch while the rest of the house burned down.”
