Spurred by advocates, the committee voted to join other states in outlawing the sale and possession of shark fins, a prized delicacy in some cultures, and a lucrative one.

PING!!
What about shark steaks?
Sharks are just fish like any other. Why should we cry more about them? Regulate the catch and leave it at that.
Because I have to pass a law that makes me feel good.
Lot of truth in that statement.
Cultures are different and it is easy to pass laws against practices alien to your culture.
Imagine trying to pass a law banning the fileting of any fish, in our culture.
(Cutting the sides of a fish off, and throwing away the rest of the fish. What a waste.)
Americans generally don't want their fish meal to look like a fish, or taste like one.
Try getting most Americans to eat bluefish or mackerel or any species with a distinct fish taste. Some will, most won't.
We prefer the white meat filets of haddock, cod , pollack, and halibut or ant other white meat fish, with a mild taste.
God forbid our meal should taste or look like...
.a fish. - Tom
