Bay Area wineries are relying on specialized dogs to sniff out wine contaminated with cork taint. Don Ford reports. Video at site.
This article is just a soft sell advertisement.
Well, if dogs can smell cancer this seems like a no-brainer.
As a young man, Hungarian Nagypapa’s (Grandpa’s) first big job in the family business was to buy wine barrels - BIG wine barrels for the cellar where the a year of the restaurant’s harvest was aged. He got a good price but got screwed in the process - a couple of the top slats in the barrels had knotholes.
Thankfully they were hidden from HIS elderly father’s view. After several years, upon inspection he found that the knots had given way and were floating on the wine along with several dead “patkányok” - uh, rats.
What to do? Confess? Ultimately, silence - and the wine with its distinct flavor was enjoyed by all (-:
“You say there’s some taint-sniffing dogs here, and they need to check our corks??”
to sniff out wine contaminated with cork taint.
= = =
The headline says Barrels.
Corks in barrels? I don’t think so.
I thought the same thing, it goes south in the bottle due to the cork. This don’t pass the smell test (snicker, snicker) does smell like something from from Norcal though; hi to my wine friends in Mendocino, Anderson Valley and Philo.
You said 'taint.'
After the big fires up there, will the wine have a ‘peat’ flavor?
re fires, good selling point lol - “now this vintage has kind of a smokey taste”
Cork taint?
I don’t want wine that tastes like taint.
I think they are called bungs and bung holes.
Bung hole: hole in one of the barrels staves used to fill up and empty the barrels
Bung: wooden (traditional) or silicone (modern) stopper used to close hermetically the bung hole
Now, that that is cleared up, do you know where Cream of Tartar comes from?
Call mayor Pete.
One of my most favorite retro ;80s rock and roll tunes.
