San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan has to answer for yet another Super Bowl collapse

Kyle Shanahan will now have another Super Bowl collapse to answer questions about.

After being peppered all week by reporters seeking to rehash that blown 28-3 lead to New England three years ago when Shanahan was offensive coordinator in Atlanta, Shanahan's first trip to the Super Bowl as a head coach ended in another late-game meltdown.

The 49ers became the third team in Super Bowl history to give up a 10-point lead in the second half when they blew a 20-10 advantage and lost 31-20 to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday night.

Saw that and commented ‘Ruth-roh! Penalty for excessive celebration!’. Our high school team was playing the SoCal favorite for the CIF ring, back in the day, and was penalized for excessive celebration in the final minutes. We DID win the ring, so the celebration became unimportant.

We were rooting for KC. When Shanahan contested that call in the 4th quarter, THAT turned the Big MO in KC’s favor. I understand because a few calls did go KC’s way, but Shanahan should have just accepted it and they might have won the ring.

The NFL got rid of the excessive celebration penalty a while ago. Teams have been doing that “photo shoot” crap all year. I hate it but it’s legal. As long as you don’t taunt an opposing player they let that stuff go now.

I did figure that out as that display absolutely would have drawn the call. I guess they have gotten rid of ‘intentional downing of the ball by the QB’, too. Or THAT would have been called several times on both teams.

Yup. Atrocious play calling. They hadn’t thrown the ball that much the whole playoffs. They were averaging over 5 yards a carry during the game. You run the ball and eat the clock. Yet for some reason these coaches all want to re-invent the game. This is two times for Shanahan now. Did the same thing with the Falcons. They ran the ball down New England’s throat the first half, and then only ran the ball 5 times after being up 28-3 over the Pats.
I’m not a fan of either of these teams. But it is maddening watching a coach throw away a Super Bowl.

Exactly! All he needs to do is get a first down there and then run clock and force KC to call time outs. It’s typical C level coach strategy and knowledge. I guess he’s smarter than the rest. All I know is if the game ended 20-17 I win 2500 in my pool. Grrrrr

10 point lead in the fourth quarter isn’t a insurmountable lead for a nfl team to come back on, especially for a team as explosive as KC. That’ one 3rd down chunk play where Mchomes bought time and threw it for a 40 yard game was the difference, it set up the TD that made them down by only 3 and that gave KC a lot of confidence to finish the game

I was also happy to see Richard Sherman pissed off face.
That was a the best shot of the night. Plus he got beat all night by T. Hill.

The Chiefs would go on to mock their “glamour shot.”

Enjoy the WH visit, guys!

I really enjoyed the look of disgust on Richard Sherman's face...knocked the smug right out of him

Yep, they targeted him in one on one coverage because his head is so big he can't run, and he got beat.

With under 12 minutes left in the game, SF could only bleed three minutes off the clock. With under 6 minutes left and still leading, SF could only drain one minute off the clock.

With QBs like Brady and Mahomes, the best defense is keeping them off the field and bleeding the clock. The Niners forgot this when it mattered most. Yes, I'm sure the Chiefs stacked the line but 5 and 6 yard runs add up and they showed in the second quarter that they could eat up the Chiefs in 10 to 15-yd chunks.

Of course, Ryan and Garoppolo aren't elite QBs, more like game managers. Brady and Mahomes are elite and supremely confident they can overcome interceptions and mistakes which is part of that eliteness.

A few points:

1, KC is a high scoring team. To beat them you need to out score them. Put your foot on the gas and leave it there. SF tried to run against a 9-10 man front instead of passing, especially on first down.
2. For some reason SF discarded the previously successful play action pass in favor of the pocket pass where most of their failures occurred.
3. The Niners receivers inability to get open and the O lines inability to hold their blocks have been a season long problem. Shoring up the line in the draft is next priority and the emergence of WR Jalen Hurd from injury will help next year.
4. This was a 4-12 team last year that fell one game short this year. The future is bright in SF.

Not really his fault. I don’t believe God gets involved with sports activities, but it was the 49ers . . .

You are right, all the year the team has come alive when it had to. As a hometown guy, I was never worried. I actually said they’d regret it when SF posed for their Sports Illustrated cover shot with a lot of time left in the game.

This team doesn’t know how to quit, get a great running back and some defensive tweaks next year and they could go undefeated. It seems like sometimes Mahomes plays conservative till he has to, then gets turned loose and scores, while the defense never laid a hand on Garropolo till the game was on the line, then they were all over him.

SF has a great offensive line and it did not seem that KC could not stop the run.

I think SF had 10 or 12 more rushing yards than KC, their top guy had in the 50 range. That isn’t exactly ‘not stopping’ the run. Compare that to GB who gave up 285 rushing yards to SF.

Ouch. Heckuva record. He’ running a 40 point 4th quarter scoring deficit.

Opponents have scored 40 points in the 4th, Zero points by the Falcons and 9ers in the 4th quarter with Shanahan making the calls in the big games he has been in with Atlanta and SF. He’s still young tho.
