San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan has to answer for yet another Super Bowl collapse

Kyle Shanahan will now have another Super Bowl collapse to answer questions about.

After being peppered all week by reporters seeking to rehash that blown 28-3 lead to New England three years ago when Shanahan was offensive coordinator in Atlanta, Shanahan's first trip to the Super Bowl as a head coach ended in another late-game meltdown.

The 49ers became the third team in Super Bowl history to give up a 10-point lead in the second half when they blew a 20-10 advantage and lost 31-20 to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday night.

I did not have a pony in the Super Bowl but I must admit I am feeling the schadenfreude. I was listening to the radio and they talked about Shanahan the Younger telling his team to play loose as he experienced the worst choke job in the Super Bowl but he moved and is back into it. Now he has perhaps the top two choke jobs in Super Bowl History. I think his Dad dipped Junior into the River Styx. In this case, he was promised career success. The other side of the coin is Junior would be cursed in the Super Bowl.

Shanahan has now had seven drives as a play-caller in the fourth quarter of Super Bowls and his teams have four punts, two turnovers, one failed fourth down and only six first downs.

KC just played a great game and eventually was able to get by the 49ers defense, no mean feat. They were destined to win this and they did with a couple of lucky breaks and great play execution..

I would think the awesome SF DL would tee off in the 4th Qtr knowing KC would have to throw but give KC credit.

They won by having an exceptional quarterback named Patrick Mahomes. The Chiefs also have a team that is unfazed about playing from behind. See the results of the AFC playoff games. It is no fault of the Niners head coach, his team just got beat by a better one. Go Chiefs!

When the 49er’s took the lead and went to the end zone as a group with their chests all stuck out and cocky thinking they just bagged the game is when things could only get worse for the 49er’s! They were smug and thought they won the game on that score. ... pride cometh before a fall!

I thought he blew it.

10 point lead, only a few minutes to go.

Runs the ball for 7 yards. Great. Then next play is a failed pass?? Then again and its 3 and out.

Same problem as with his game with Atlanta. He could not bring himself to use the clock up on the ground.

SF has a great offensive line and it did not seem that KC could not stop the run.

He never learned apparently.

Didn’t think just one player would make a difference but, Mahomes was amazing...

Yep, Shanahan’s bonehead play calling opened the door for the Chiefs.

I was perfectly content to see "Poop City nancy" deprived of a reason to celebrate.

The 49ers did show "pride before the fall". Very much like the democrats have these past long months.

May they continue to experience similar disappointment.

And yeah, the NFL made itself political a long time ago.

Hail to the Chiefs (I know one President who is celebrating this!) and thanks for the delicious cup of schadenfreude this AM!

I was actually impressed that Shanahan stayed aggressive with play calling. Everyone expected running plays as Conventional wisdom would have told you to keep the ball on the ground to burn up clock. He felt that he had to keep his foot on the throttle and get the big play to put it away. Marty Schottenheimer and his prevent-offense would have ran three times and punted. It didn’t work out for Shanahan last night but I can see his motive as KC has shown their comeback skills repeatedly this year.

Shanahan really did a piss poor job of clock management as well to end the first half. He had all three timeouts yet let KC run off 30 seconds on 4th down Punt formation. Then seemingly was running out the clock to go into halftime tied up 10-10. Fox Cameras pick up the SF Owner in his box signaling to take a time out. Nope, two running plays. SF finally took a shot down field only for an offensive pass interface penalty to essentially end the half.

I guess Shanahan takes the collar for this because he is head coach, but it
was the SF defense that allowed KC to go the length of the field at the end
of the 4th qtr. I really enjoyed the look of disgust on Richard Sherman's
face...knocked the smug right out of him. As a life long Eagles fan I was
pleased to see Big Red finally get his ring.

Shanahan whined about “potential” bad reffing before the game and them was outraged when Kitter stiff armed a defender to get free and got caught for offensive pass interference...crybabies don’t get my sympathy.

They went from 4-12 last year to the Super Bowl this year. Pretty horrible coaching.

SF also came off the plane wiggling and jumping around dressed like gangsters. They were cocky, arrogant unfocused entitled idiots. They wasted time celebrating before the game was over. Embarrassing display.

In my mind, the 49ers are going to be forever stained because of Colin Caepernick.

On another note, Our local Fox TV station ran a short promo before the Super Bowl began. It showed a couple of the local Fox News anchors being asked “Who should Seattle root for in the Super Bowl?”. They both looked a little awkward, then they both replied “Kansas City”. When asked why, they both replied “Because they’re not the Niners”.

The promo then ended with the Q13 logo in Seattle blue and green, and at the bottom of the screen, it said ‘#NOTTHENINERS’.
