The chicken tractor idea sounds perfect. They really are good little weeders/cultivators.

LOL, thanks, but I'll have to think about that one.
Although, if you have a dog that digs too much, and can train it to dig in a particular spot, maybe I could hire it to do my excavating for me?
It's the excavating that's going to be the hardest, I think. I don't have enough to hire somebody for it, I've checked. And the terrain is steep enough that skipping it is not an option. So I'm looking at creative alternatives.
As for the pigs, I've actually looked into that. But talking with people who have already tried it, they all said that chickens worked better.
