Add to that the fact that it has spread to other countries including the US, there is reason to believe we’d be able to figure out the origin and whether it was “engineered” or not.

Have you read the articles on how the genomic sequence for the spike region, all of a sudden, only has (I think it was) 68% overlap with the closest occurring naturally known relatives?

Everyone agrees it cannot have happened by recent natural recombination, and what are the known and accepted mutation rates, IIRC 10^-4 / base pair / generation?
