80,000 Americans died of flu related causes in 2018. If we have a full blown epidemic I’m thinking a large percentage who die from caronavirus might well have been taken by the flu anyway.

Probably so - either virus will go for the low-hanging fruit.

The estimated death rate from flu was 34,157 out of 35,520,883, or about 0.1%. The hospitalization number was 490,561, or about 1.4%. In the case of the coronavirus, the death rate is 3%, and the critical care rate is 25%. Another way of putting this is that the death rate 30x as high, and the critical care rate is probably similar.
