There are reports of people in Wuhan saying their family members’ death certificates were falsified. The cause of death was recorded as “viral pneumonia” or “lung failure” or some other thing, even when they knew it was coronavirus.

I’ve been taking the numbers out of China and cubing them. Now I’m thinking I estimated too low.

Sorry I don’t know why that didn’t parse:

Emerg Infect Dis. 2006 Jun; 12(6): 1033–1034.

The US Department of Labor recommends air-purifying respirators (e.g., N95, N99, or N100) as part of a comprehensive respiratory protection program for workers directly involved with avian influenza–infected birds or patients (1). N95 respirators have 2 advantages over simple cloth or surgical masks; they are less than 95% efficient at filtering 0.3-μm particles (smaller than the 5-μm size of large droplets—created during talking, coughing, and sneezing—which usually transmit influenza) and are fit tested to ensure that infectious droplets and particles do not leak around the mask (2–4). Even if N95 filtration is unnecessary for avian influenza, N95 fit offers advantages over a loose-fitting surgical mask by eliminating leakage around the mask.

I still think back to the reporter/journalist who returned from ebolaland and ‘self quarantined’ by going to a local restaurant.

Heaven forbid she order in and pay digitally. Or have food delivered by friends. Nope, no cold food or home prepared meals for her! She’s special.

Don’t forget is the rest of you that will need attention as well. Hair, clothing, shoes, eyes, etc.

N95 mask is insufficient by itself and all protective clothing/eyewear is insufficient if not considered as part of a comprehensive decontamination protocol once you’ve returned home.

This is not an ‘end of the world, everyone panic’ post. But simply wearing an N95 mask to the grocery store simply means you likely won’t SPREAD it IF you have it, via your nose/mouth. It will do little to keep you from actually GETTING it.

I apologize if any of these are repeats:

Thailand’s health ministry has confirmed 14 cases of coronavirus, the second-most of any country behind China. China has more than 4,500 confirmed cases of the virus, mostly in the city of Wuhan, where the virus began. More than 100 Chinese people have died from the disease.

*****Thailand health minister Anutin Charnvirakul said on Tuesday that the government is “not able to stop the spread” of coronavirus in the country, according to Sky News.*****

The Thai government estimates that about 22,000 tourists from Wuhan visited the country in January, possibly exposing vast numbers of people to the virus.

Upon a closer read of the articles, yes they do say a max of 14 days. But I have heard/read elsewhere that it is an average. Who knows which is correct? Even medical researchers would tell you that these numbers are an educated guess.

Agree that we should exercise more, rather than less, caution in quarantining people. It kind of sucks for them, to be sure, but it is IMHO necessary for the health of the populace. Give them all of the creature comforts including internet access, and plentiful medical treatment if needed, but definitely quarantine them and for long enough to actually do something.

I agree, but something is better than nothing. The paper I posted is from an infectious disease journal, and they state up front that this is not ideal.

The takeaway is that something is better than nothing IF a person must get out. Ideally, people will be prepped and be able to stay home. If a person MUST get out, they should wear masks, goggles or face shield, gloves and maybe something like a raincoat? Most people won’t have hazmat suits. As others have said too, there is a very specific way and order to take all this PPE off as well to avoid contamination. I would also take off all the PPE, and shoes, outside and have a garbage bag outside for disposal.

I have seen photos of people improvising in China by putting clear water jugs that cover their whole head over their masks too.

PS, shoes are not listed in this PPE, but if possible, I’d use slip ones that I could push off with my feet outside. I would not touch my shoes. Just an idea.

Last point, I think the area of contamination is estimated to be 6 feet, so keep that in mind when going out. We are practicing that even now where we can.

See fig 2: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4327893/

The closest match might be the SARS in the top right. So mostly about 4 days for the looks of it. But there is a wide variety of possibilities. A few viruses incubate for years.
