Evening, folks. Be back after a shower and a grocery/KFC run. My resp. bug is back so I’m moving a little slow today.

Glad you’re alive. I think the last time you checked in you had been coughing up blood and were drinking scotch.

Hi Gina, life is good. Reheated some frozen smoked turkey breasts this weekend. I love these, do you smoke turkey?

Vision, we’re not big on turkey, so no we don’t normally do them at all, but if YOU smoked it, I’ll bet it’s excellent. If I ever have them, I like them best deep fried. That seals in the moisture, since they tend to be dry—the white meat, anyway.

Well, I was coughing up blood at the time, but it was Irish whiskey I was drinking. Bushmill's, straight from Dublin, with a pair of matching shot glasses (of which I have about forty, from vacation spots to limited edition types from distillers; I collect them as well as beer steins) - I think I may have told you that my sister went to Ireland on a business trip and decided to make mine an Irish Christmas. (You should see the pair of sweet Guinness pint pub glasses she got me, too. And a coaster with a Celtic knot on it.) I just got the last of the hoarseness out of my throat a few days ago, and *boom* I wake up this morning with a sore throat, stuffy ears, and full sinuses. I hope this is just a temporary, 24 or 48 hour thing. Lousy time to have to deal with it - last Saturday, someone at my neighbor's house was making a left at the end of our street, and hit my front end with his truck as he pulled out. Caused almost $2000 worth of damage. The insurance company gave me a repair payout, but the damn police report took four days to get because it was a holiday weekend, and got it written up saying I hit him, and I was at a dead stop on the main road because the lane to turn is so narrow there. That was a load of crap, they did a really shoddy job of writing it up, but it was raining and about 10:30 in the evening, so I imagine it was pretty low on their 'Things I'd Rather Be Doing' list. Now I gotta wrestle with the cops and claims adjuster because my wife had our deductible set at $1000 on that car. Noooooo, couldn't have been the Pontiac or the truck, they're both paid for, it had to be my crossover with three payments left on it. I need to get some work done quick because my disability hearing is on 2/18 and I may need to drive down to Montgomery, AL for it.

Sheesh! I hope you finally got it settled that you were the hittee and not the hitter! And I hope you feel better soon!

Unfortunately, nothing is settled yet. Sure, my insurance company was on it like a rat on a Cheeto and had my claim processed within 48 hours, but that police report is preventing me from filing a claim for the balance with the other guy’s insurance company! Something has to be rectified here. The cops didn’t even take any pics or walk around to mark who had what damage, or anything. Not only that, my insurance company lowballed the repair estimate (’natch), and will probably jack up our rates now.

Oh, that’s a bummer. It’s too bad you couldn’t force them to document it better.

Thanks. The way my luck has been running the last year or two, I'll probably find out I'm the only person in Swamp Puddle, Alabama, who has come in indirect contact from someone passing through from Wuhan, China.
I'm going to find some old, abandoned government missile bunker in the mountains around here, seal myself in it, and go offgrid premanently. Can't even go out to buy tacos and beer anymore without playing bumper cards with some high school educated, manual labor yahoo or catching a damn alien space virus off of someone.

Gina, that’s what I’m working on this week. I could wait a week or three and let our tax refund cover the deductible, transfer some IRA fuunds, (or, assuming it works out in my favor, pay out of pocket if my disability hearing is successful, because I’ll be getting a fairly substantial back-end payout due to the length of time), but there’s principle at stake here. I was wronged, it cost me money, and I want the opportunity to plant my knee in someone’s cojones over it, even if it’s just a moral victory.

Yes, but they seem to be somewhat quieter, more subdued and less slovenly (if one can empirically gauge such things). I think that coming back from MD physically ill, and sporting a righteous head of steam, seems to have had enough of an effect that there was a little confab behind my back, and the concensus resulting from it finally was Don't Piss Off The King In His Castle. So, they've been following the rules within the outer margin of tolerance for the last couple of weeks. I think the wife also noted that her evenings were less stress-inducing if she didn't have to play referee as much, so she broke down and laid down the law a little more forcefully. I know her well after 22 years; she full well still made me the ogre in the circumstances, but appealed to them to make her life easier if they just humor me. Whatever. If being labeled the guy in the black hat means I don't keel over from a myocardial infarction or going on a shooting spree, so be it. I'll gladly hoist the black flag and wield a cutlass for atmospheric effect. Even the cats seems to be less neurotic and aren't hiding in here and/or licking bald spots in their fur. Believe it or not, they're an instinctively wonderful gauge of household tension, even moreso than a dog.
