Massachusetts Governor John A. Andrews received a letter from Secretary of War Stanton authorizing the Governor to raise a regiment of black free men for service in the Union Army. Recruiting began almost immediately. On May 28th the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment departed Boston for Beaufort SC.

the 54th was the first black regiment authorized by the War Department. Another black regiment (1st Kansas Colored Infantry) had been raised earlier, but it had not been authorized by the War Department. These were the first of 175 black regiments of infantry, artillery, cavalry and engineers raised for the Union Army. By the end of the Civil War, 178,000 black freemen and ex slaves would served in the Union Army. Another 25,000 black freemen and ex slaves served in the United States Navy.

Due to the war up there being so unpopular, they were running out of Mics fresh off of the boat and conscription wasn’t working. So they had to use blacks in the union army.

The Confederate Army drafted a year earlier than the Union Army and drafted a higher percentage of men into that army than the Union Army did. By wars end 89% of the Union Army were volunteers and 87% of the Confederate Army were volunteers.

Mic is a derogatory term you little jerkoff. My ancestors were from Ireland and served with the Union Army.

Different dynamic for people defending their lands and their homes from a violent invasion by people trying to subjugate them.

Pressing men into service to defend the homeland is a necessity. Pressing men into service to go to a place that has done them no wrong and to kill people because their ruler tells them to do it, is not a necessity, and is in fact immoral.

Cromwell did to the Irish what the North did to the South, and with help from dragooned and pressed Irish.

Seems as if they were wanting to go there wouldn't have been the horrible riots in New York and Chicago.

Calling someone what they are isn’t a derogatory term. The little sob is a jerk.

None, because it isn't true. You send warships to attack people, you get a war. Lincoln knew it, his cabinet knew it, Major Anderson knew it, and that is exactly what happened.

And then he pointed the finger of blame at the people who were defending themselves and he would lock up anyone who said otherwise.

Meh. Not impressed. Can't remember the last time I thought he made a relevant point. Of course I stopped reading most of what he writes, and only occasionally glance at it. Sometimes i'll skim it to see if anything interesting jumps out, but it usually doesn't.

Did get him to admit Southern exports produced 60% of the revenue, but his usual go to figure is 50%.

This is still a case of 1/4th of the population making up half the Federal budget, even using his lowball numbers.
