Being born and raised in California (fourth generation, not counting my native american great-grandmother), I would tend to disagree. California was solid Conservative until recently, yes, but unfettered immigration and non-assimilation are the results and perpetuating factors of liberalism.

What really turned California was the oversized influence of Hollywood and the rest of the entertainment industry after it turned communist/liberal in the '50's through the '60's and made the place a mecca for all the other liberal idiots coming from other states (think hippies. Growing up there in the '60's, almost all the hippies I knew came from somewhere else). Eventually, they became the dominate power and ruined that beautiful land. Now that that's been accomplished, their progeny are fleeing back to other states and spreading the rot.

The expression "California: the land of fruits and nuts" came from the fact that that fruits and nuts tend to roll downhill.
