The cabernet sauvignon, enough to fill eight large tanker trucks, spilled at the Rodney Strong Vineyards in Healdsburg Wednesday after a door near the bottom of a large blending tank popped open, spilling all of the wine it was holding into a sanitary sewer system on the property, the Press Democrat reported.
The wine spilled into a drainage ditch that feeds into Reiman Creek and eventually made its way to the Russian River.
According to the Governors Office of Emergency Services, which was notified of the accident on Wednesday, about 20% of the 97,112 gallons spilled were contained. Estimates showed anywhere between 46,000 and 96,000 gallons reached the Russian River.
The Sonoma County Sheriffs Office helicopter determined the wine reached as far south as Riverfront Regional Park within a matter of hours.

Bottle of wine
Fruit of the vine
When ya gonna let me get sober?
That’s ~489,000 bottles of wine! If it only cost them $10-15/bottle to produce (probably it’s more), that’s a cool half to three-quarters of a million dollars in the river - without even thinking about the potential profit after covering costs.
Trout Beurre Rouge
wonder what environmental impact/species harmed? I doubt every life form enjoys wine in large quantities.
Wow! That thing drinks like a fish!
I’m goin down to the river. Down to the river I’ve gone.
Red wine to join the human feces and discarded needles from the kommiefornia addicts. Kommie waterways are having a hard time these days.
“do they sell that size box wine at Costco?”
97000 gallons is about 490,000 750 ml bottles.
At $10 per bottle that’s about 4.9 million dollars.
Reminds me of the time that Boudreaux asked the genie to turn the entire bayou into beer.
And then Thibedeaux looked around the boat in disgust and said, “Boudreaux you idiot! Now where we gonna pee?”
Your math is good. I only note that their cab retails for +/- $20 per bottle of which they likely receive about $10 per bottle. I am guessing that some employee is in a lot of trouble.
I am!!
To see a good wine go to waste...
such a shame.
I may tear up.
Or go get me a bottle & drink in memoriam.
Hillary was “saved” from drowning three times. Her last words were “throw me back in the river”

I worked on the “dirty” side of a metro water and sewer dept.
Do NOT miss it. I still shudder at what is under some local roads just waiting to collapse in a FUBAR manner.
