Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Russian Jews and Ukrainian Jews have been like the McCoys and the Hatfields, at least verbally. Ukrainian Jews certainly don’t think the Ukrainian government are Nazis. The Russians are big on the Nazi tag because of the Holocaust implications, but the real issue they have with Ukraine is its resistance to annexation by Russia. Ukrainian Jews certainly don’t think Ukraine is populated by genocidal anti-semites.

There aren’t that many Jewish people left in Russia either. Between Russia’s economic freeze with Ukraine and its invasion, the Ukrainian economy has been moribund for years. The vast majority of Jews there, along with a substantial chunk of non-Jewish Ukrainians, have left for better economic prospects elsewhere. Zelensky is part of a dwindling minority of Ukrainian Jews. Israel’s nominal GDP per capita is almost 20x Ukraine’s. Israel’s nominal GDP per capita is only about 4x Russia’s, yet 90% of Russian Jews have left Russia.

What’s impressive is that there are still more Jews in Ukraine than in Russia, despite its straitened prospects. And a Jew is the President of Ukraine. That’s like an Untouchable becoming the Prime Minister of India, or a Jew becoming the President of Russia - something that is unlikely to happen, ever.

Maybe it will, maybe it won’t; we’ll just have to wait and see, but I’m with Ukraine on this one.

I’ve lived longer than 50 years, was involved and paid attention, but I still have trouble getting my mind around how much the world has changed in the 50 years that have brought us to our now ... or in the 50 years prior to them.

I have hope now and for the future and have faith that the story we’re in has a happy ending.
