“We have something really, really important to tell you about your daughter who disappeared 23 years ago” - someone will be in contact with you at some non-specific time.

Do you think it’s possible they want to be able to tell her in person? I’d like a heads-up in a case like this, than to just open the door and see an officer there. Nor would I like hearing it over the telephone.

I think giving the family a head up that a media circus is about to start is a good thing.
Doesn’t sound like the FBI leaked this to the press, but a family member or a friend of the family that was confided in did.
Anyone who has payed attention to the media in the US would want a heads up to prepare for it, rather than be blind sided... I know I would.
